A Bible Study Based on the CEV Translation
A Time of Renewal and Judgment
The Book of Joel is a prophetic call to repentance amid coming judgment but also a promise of renewal. Joel speaks of a devastating locust plague as a symbol of God’s judgment but also promises that God will pour out His Spirit on all people.
This promise finds its ultimate fulfillment in Jesus Christ, who sends the Holy Spirit to empower His followers and ushers in the new Day of the Lord—the time when God’s kingdom is fully established.
Using the Contemporary English Version (CEV), this study explores how Jesus is revealed through Joel’s prophecy and the hope it offers believers.
1. Jesus Sends the Holy Spirit to Empower His Followers
“I will pour out my Spirit on all people.”
— Joel 2:28 (CEV)
Joel’s prophecy about the outpouring of the Spirit is quoted by the Apostle Peter in Acts 2 at Pentecost, when Jesus fulfills this promise by sending the Holy Spirit to His disciples.
“You will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes to you.”
— Acts 1:8 (CEV)
Jesus promised that the Spirit would empower believers to live boldly and bear witness.
2. Jesus Is the Coming Judge on the Day of the Lord
“The day of the Lord is coming.”
— Joel 1:15 (CEV)
Joel warns of a coming day of judgment, the “Day of the Lord,” a time of reckoning and restoration.
Jesus Himself is the righteous judge who will return to bring justice.
“The Son of Man will come with his angels and separate the good from the bad.”
— Matthew 13:41-42 (CEV)
3. Jesus Offers Hope and Restoration
“The Lord will give you rain at the right time.”
— Joel 2:23 (CEV)
Joel promises restoration and blessing after judgment.
Jesus is the source of living water and eternal restoration.
“Whoever drinks the water I give will never be thirsty again.”
— John 4:14 (CEV)
4. Jesus Calls for Repentance and Renewal
“Return to me with all your heart.”
— Joel 2:12 (CEV)
Joel’s call to repent and turn back to God echoes Jesus’ invitation to follow Him and receive new life.
“Repent, for the kingdom of heaven has come near.”
— Matthew 4:17 (CEV)
Conclusion: Jesus, the Spirit-Giver and Judge
Joel’s prophecy points forward to Jesus as the giver of the Holy Spirit who empowers His Church and the judge who will return to establish His kingdom.
His message is one of hope amid judgment, calling us to repentance and promising restoration.
