Jesus in 1 Peter: Hope Through Suffering

A Bible Study Based on the CEV Translation

Christ Our Living Hope

The First Letter of Peter was written to encourage Christians who were enduring persecution and trials. Its central theme is this: because of Jesus Christ, we have a living hope, and even in suffering, we are not alone.

Peter, one of Jesus’ closest disciples, writes with the heart of a shepherd. He reflects deeply on Christ’s suffering, His example, His glory, and His coming return. This epistle is soaked in the message of the Gospel—what Jesus has done, what He is doing, and what He will do for those who follow Him.

1. Jesus: The Living Hope (1 Peter 1:3)

“Praise God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ. God is so good, and by raising Jesus from death, he has given us new life and a hope that lives on.”
1 Peter 1:3 (CEV)

Peter opens with celebration. Jesus’ resurrection is the foundation of our hope. Because He conquered death, believers are reborn into a living hope—not a dead religion or fleeting wish. Jesus is alive, and through Him, our future is secure.

2. Jesus: The Lamb Without Defect (1 Peter 1:18–19)

“You were rescued by the precious blood of Christ, that spotless and innocent lamb.”
1 Peter 1:18–19 (CEV)

Peter points back to the Passover Lamb in Exodus, identifying Jesus as the spotless Lamb who redeems us. This language connects the Old Testament to the New, showing how Jesus fulfills God’s plan of salvation. His sacrifice was pure, sufficient, and eternally effective.

3. Jesus: The Cornerstone (1 Peter 2:6–7)

“Look! I am placing in Zion a choice and precious cornerstone. No one who has faith in that one will be disappointed.”
1 Peter 2:6 (CEV)

Peter refers to Jesus as the foundation of our faith. Though rejected by people, Jesus is chosen by God. Everyone who believes in Him is built into a spiritual house, and He becomes the reference point for everything. This truth echoes Peter’s own confession: “You are the Messiah, the Son of the living God.” (Matthew 16:16, CEV)

4. Jesus: The Example in Suffering (1 Peter 2:21–24)

“Christ did not sin or ever tell a lie. Although he was abused, he never tried to get even. And when he suffered, he made no threats. Instead, he had faith in God, who judges fairly.”
1 Peter 2:22–23 (CEV)

In a passage of great depth, Peter calls believers to follow Jesus’ example in suffering. He didn’t retaliate. He didn’t curse His enemies. He bore our sins and entrusted Himself to God. Jesus is the model of how to respond to injustice—with faith, love, and endurance.

5. Jesus: The Shepherd and Guardian (1 Peter 2:25)

“You had wandered away like sheep. Now you have returned to the one who is your shepherd and protector.”
1 Peter 2:25 (CEV)

This verse echoes Jesus’ own words in John 10: “I am the good shepherd.” Jesus watches over His people, not just as a leader but as a protector and caretaker. In a world of chaos, we are never alone—Jesus walks with us.

6. Jesus: The Suffering Savior (1 Peter 3:18)

“Christ died once for our sins. An innocent person died for those who are guilty. Christ did this to bring you to God.”
1 Peter 3:18 (CEV)

Here, Peter summarizes the Gospel in one sentence: Jesus, innocent and righteous, died for the guilty to bring us to God. His death was purposeful and complete. He suffered once—but the effect is eternal. This is the heart of our faith.

7. Jesus: The Victorious Lord (1 Peter 3:22)

“Christ is now in heaven, where he sits at the right side of God. All angels, authorities, and powers are under his control.”
1 Peter 3:22 (CEV)

Jesus is not just the suffering Savior; He is the glorified and reigning King. All power is subject to Him. No matter how difficult our present trials may be, Peter assures us: Jesus reigns, and He is in control.

8. Jesus: The Soon-Returning King (1 Peter 4:7)

“Everything will soon come to an end. So be serious and be sensible enough to pray.”
1 Peter 4:7 (CEV)

Peter emphasizes the urgency of faith. The return of Jesus is near, and we are to live alert, holy lives. Jesus is coming back—not just as Savior, but as Judge and King.

9. Jesus: The Chief Shepherd (1 Peter 5:4)

“When Christ the chief shepherd returns, you will be given a crown that will never lose its glory.”
1 Peter 5:4 (CEV)

Peter offers this beautiful promise to all who serve Christ faithfully: Jesus, the Chief Shepherd, will reward His people with eternal glory. He is not only our Lord in life and our model in suffering—He is our rewarder in eternity.

Conclusion: Suffering With Hope Because of Jesus

First Peter teaches that suffering is temporary, but glory is eternal. Christians are called to endure trials not through sheer willpower, but through the example and presence of Jesus Christ.

He is our Hope, our Shepherd, our Savior, and our Lord. And because of Him, even in pain, we can rejoice. Our identity is secure in Him, and our future is certain.
