1 Samuel 2 — The Lord Raises Up the Humble and Brings Down the Proud

Redemption Advances Through Worship, Judgment, and the Quiet Rise of God’s Servant

The contrast in this chapter is sharp and deliberate:

• Hannah: humility, worship, surrender
• Eli’s sons: arrogance, corruption, contempt for God
• Samuel: faithful service and silent growth
• The Lord: sovereign over all destinies

This chapter reveals the deep structure of how God works in history:

God raises up the humble.
God brings down the proud.
God alone is the Lord.

This is covenant truth, kingdom truth, gospel truth.

1. Hannah’s Song — Worship Rooted in the Sovereignty of God (2:1–10)

Hannah’s song is not about motherhood.
It is about the Lord Himself — His character, His rule, His holiness, His justice.

This is not emotional release.
This is theological proclamation.

Hannah says:

“My heart exults in the Lord.” (v. 1)

Her joy is in God, not in the child.

The gift has not become the center —
the Giver is the center.

Then:

“My mouth derides my enemies,
because I rejoice in your salvation.”

This is not personal revenge.
This is worship in the truth that:

• God acts,
• God sees,
• God vindicates.

The Heart of Her Song

“There is none holy like the Lord;
for there is none besides You.” (v. 2)

Holiness means:

• God is not like us.
• God is pure.
• God is absolute reality.
• God is truth.

Then the reversal theme:

“The bows of the mighty are broken,
but the feeble bind on strength.” (v. 4)

The Lord:

• breaks self-reliance,
• strengthens the weak,
• frustrates pride,
• exalts the humble.

This is the pattern of the Kingdom.

Hannah continues:

“The Lord kills and brings to life;
He brings down to Sheol and raises up.” (v. 6)

This is sovereignty without explanation:

• Life and death are in the Lord’s hands,
• No circumstance is random,
• God governs all.

“The Lord makes poor and makes rich.” (v. 7)

This does not teach fatalism.
It teaches dependence.

Then the key:

“He raises up the poor from the dust…
to sit with princes and inherit a throne of honor.” (v. 8)

This language will shape:

• David’s kingship,
• Mary’s Magnificat,
• Christ’s teaching in the Beatitudes,
• The gospel of grace.

Then the climax:

“The Lord will judge the ends of the earth;
He will give strength to His king
and exalt the horn of His anointed.” (v. 10)

There is no king yet in Israel.

Hannah sees:

• The coming monarchy,
• The coming Messiah,
• The Horn of Salvation,
• Christ.

Hannah’s prayer introduces the entire theological arc of the monarchy and the gospel.

She is speaking Revelation in seed form.

2. Samuel Before the Lord (2:11)

“And the boy was ministering to the Lord.”

Samuel is:

• not yet speaking prophecy,
• not yet performing signs,
• not yet recognized.

He is simply:

• present,
• faithful,
• near the Lord.

Spiritual formation begins in presence, not performance.

This is how God prepares His servants.

3. The Corruption of Eli’s Sons (2:12–17)

“Now the sons of Eli were worthless men.
They did not know the Lord.” (v. 12)

This does not mean:

• they had no religious education,
• they did not participate in rituals.

It means:

• They did not recognize God,
• They did not fear God,
• They did not submit to His holiness.

They used the priesthood to:

• seize,
• take,
• devour,
• exploit.

They took the meat intended for sacrifice by force.

The text says:

“Thus the sin of the young men was very great.” (v. 17)

Because:

“They treated the offering of the Lord with contempt.”

This is not simply bad behavior.
This is blasphemy.
This is defilement of worship.
This is priestly corruption.

This is what devastates nations.

4. Samuel Continues in Faithfulness (2:18–21)

The narrative immediately contrasts:

“Samuel was ministering before the Lord.” (v. 18)

While the priests defile worship —
Samuel serves humbly.

While leaders are corrupt —
God is raising up another.

Naomi once returned empty.
Now Hannah receives more children.

God is restoring.

This is slow renewal.

This is how God rebuilds:

• quietly,
• patiently,
• faithfully,
• one life at a time.

5. Eli Confronts His Sons — But Too Late (2:22–25)

Eli rebukes his sons:

“It is not a good report that I hear…” (v. 24)

But:

• He does not remove them,
• Does not discipline them,
• Does not protect the sanctuary.

His failure is not lack of love —
but lack of holiness.

The text says:

“They would not listen… for it was the will of the Lord to put them to death.” (v. 25)

This is not fatalism.
It is judgment.

Their hearts are hardened by years of unrepented sin.

Where the priesthood is corrupt,
God does not reform it —
He replaces it.

6. Samuel Grows (2:26)

This is simple, profound, and beautiful:

“Now the boy Samuel continued to grow both in stature and in favor with the Lord and also with man.”

This exact phrase will later describe Jesus in Luke 2:52.

Samuel is a type of Christ:

• From humble birth,
• Growing in righteousness,
• Ministering before the Lord,
• Bringing God’s word back to the nation.

7. The Prophetic Judgment on Eli’s House (2:27–36)

A man of God comes and speaks judgment:

The Lord reminds Eli:

• The priesthood was given as a gift,
• To honor God,
• To lead in worship.

Then the indictment:

“Why then do you scorn my sacrifices?” (v. 29)

Eli honored:

• his sons,
• his comfort,
• his position,

more than the Lord.

This is the root of all spiritual collapse.

The Lord says:

“Those who honor Me I will honor,
and those who despise Me shall be lightly esteemed.” (v. 30)

Then the judgment:

• Eli’s house will fall,
• His sons will die on the same day,
• The priesthood will move to another line.

And the promise:

“I will raise up for myself a faithful priest,
who shall do according to what is in my heart and in my mind.” (v. 35)

This points first to:

• Zadok (during the kingship of Solomon)

But ultimately to:

• Christ, the eternal High Priest

who:

• Represents the people,
• Offers Himself as sacrifice,
• Mediates forever.

Where human priesthood fails,
Christ becomes the true Priest.

Christ-Centered Fulfillment

Hannah’s song anticipates Christ:

• Christ exalts the humble and brings down the proud (Luke 1:52–53).
• Christ is the Horn of Salvation (Luke 1:69).
• Christ is the King the Lord strengthens (1 Samuel 2:10 fulfilled in Jesus).

Samuel foreshadows Christ:

Eli’s sons warn of false priesthood:

• Religion without reverence,
• Leadership without holiness,
• Worship without obedience.

Christ replaces corrupt priesthood with:

• purity,
• truth,
• love,
• self-giving sacrifice.

Christ is:

• the fulfillment of the priesthood,
• the meaning of the sacrifice,
• the presence of God among His people.

The Heart of This Passage

1 Samuel 2 teaches:

• Worship begins with seeing God as holy.
• God raises up the humble and brings down the proud.
• Faithfulness in small things forms great servants.
• Leadership without holiness destroys the community.
• God sees, weighs, measures, and judges.
• Renewal begins slowly — but surely — in the presence of God.
• Christ is the true Priest and the true King foretold in Hannah’s song.

The call is:

Honor the Lord.
Serve faithfully in the ordinary.
Trust that God sees.
He raises up what is humble and pure —
and He brings down what is proud and corrupt.

Eternal Life — Life in God’s Presence and the Miracle of New Birth Through Christ

Eternal life is not a distant hope or a reward waiting beyond this world.
It is the sudden breaking in of God’s presence—
light entering darkness,
love overcoming fear,
the Father drawing His children home.

Many view eternal life as a future destination,

Eternal life isn’t just living forever—
it is life in the very presence of God.
It is the work of God in our lives—
