1 Chronicles 22 — Preparing for Worship That Will Outlast a Generation

1 Chronicles 22 takes place immediately after the plague is stopped on Mount Moriah (chapter 21) — the place where:

  • judgment halted,
  • mercy triumphed,
  • and sacrifice opened the way for reconciliation.

From this place of atonement and mercy, David now begins preparing for the temple.

This chapter is not about construction plans.
It is about the spiritual formation of a people who will worship God rightly.

The chronicler shows us three movements:

  1. The land is chosen by God — worship begins with God’s initiative.
  2. David prepares everything that Solomon will need.
  3. David speaks to Solomon, passing on not techniques, but faith.

This chapter teaches that:

  • Worship does not begin in the generation that performs it.
  • Worship is prepared through the faithfulness of one generation
and fulfilled in the obedience of the next.

David Declares the Temple Location (1 Chronicles 22:1)

David says:

“This is the house of the LORD God,
and this is the altar of burnt offering for Israel.”

David does not choose the location.
God reveals it.

This is Mount Moriah:

  • Where Abraham offered Isaac (Genesis 22),
  • Where God provided a substitute,
  • Where mercy stopped judgment in chapter 21.

The message is unmistakable:

The house of God is founded on mercy, not human greatness.

Worship begins with atonement,
not inspiration, not architecture.

This is why the chronicler begins temple theology here, not in 1 Kings.

The temple exists:

  • because God has made peace,
  • because forgiveness has been given,
  • because God desires to dwell with His people.

David Prepares What Solomon Could Not (v. 2–5)

Solomon has been chosen by God — but Solomon is young and inexperienced.

Therefore:

  • David prepares stone,
  • timber from Lebanon,
  • iron and bronze “too great to weigh,”
  • gold and silver in abundance.

David does not build the temple,
but he lays the foundation for its building.

This is intergenerational faithfulness:

| One generation fights battles,

the next builds worship.

David shed blood,
Solomon will build peace.

David’s work was warfare,
Solomon’s work will be worship.

The chronicler is teaching the returned exiles:

  • Not all callings are the same.
  • Some prepare the ground others will stand on.
  • Faithfulness is not measured by visibility, but by obedience.

Your season may be:

  • preparing,
  • gathering,
  • forming,
  • clearing ground.

Someone after you may build what you prayed and labored for.

This is not loss.
This is how God works across generations.

David Instructs Solomon — The Heart of Worship (v. 6–13)

David calls Solomon and speaks words that shape the life of every worshiper:

“The LORD has chosen you.”

Identity comes from God — not talent, not desire.

“Build a house for the name of the LORD.”

The temple is not for national prestige,
not for cultural symbolism,
but for the presence and glory of God.

David speaks blessing:

  • peace,
  • wisdom,
  • understanding,
  • obedience.

But the key command is:

“Now set your heart and your soul to seek the LORD your God.” (v. 19)

Worship is not craftsmanship first.
Worship is devotion.

The temple will be impressive — but God does not dwell in a structure of stone:

God dwells where hearts are yielded to Him.

Solomon’s success is neither architectural nor administrative.
It is spiritual:

  • He must seek the Lord.
  • He must obey His commandments.
  • He must walk in God’s ways.

The chronicler is forming an entire nation to understand:

  • Worship without obedience is empty.
  • Worship without reverence is hollow.
  • Worship without the heart is no worship at all.

David Calls the Leaders to Support Solomon (v. 17–19)

David does not leave Solomon alone.
He calls the leaders of Israel and commands them to:

“Help Solomon… for the LORD your God is with you.”

This reveals a foundational truth:

The house of God is built by a people, not an individual.

The chronicler emphasizes unity:

  • Leaders,
  • Craftsmen,
  • Tribes,
  • Families,

all participate in the building of worship.

The temple is not David’s gift to Israel.
It is Israel’s identity under God.

This anticipates the New Testament:

  • The Church is a temple,
  • built not of stone,
  • but of living people,
  • joined together in Christ.

Summary — 1 Chronicles 22

1 Chronicles 22 teaches:

  • The temple stands where mercy halted judgment.
  • Worship is founded on atonement.
  • David prepares what Solomon will build — faithfulness across generations.
  • God chooses the builder — calling is divine, not self-created.
  • The task is not construction first, but seeking God with the whole heart.
  • Leadership shares responsibility — the house of God is built together.
  • The meaning of the temple is God dwelling with His people.

This chapter foreshadows Christ:

  • the Son of David,
  • the One who builds the true temple not made with hands,
  • the One in whom God dwells with humanity forever.

And it anticipates the Church:

  • the living temple,
  • formed by the Spirit,
  • built on the foundation of Christ.

The message is clear:

Worship is not a moment.
Worship is a life prepared across generations,
rooted in mercy,
and centered on God’s presence.
