A focused encouragement that points your identity back to Jesus and the Father’s faithful love.

The Cost of Discipleship ✝: Following Jesus When Obedience Requires Everything

Discipleship is not a hobby, a convenient belief, or a weekend religious identity—it is the wholehearted surrender of your life to Jesus Christ. When Jesus walked along the shores of Galilee calling ordinary people to follow Him, He was not offering comfort, convenience, or a casual spiritual lifestyle. He was calling them into a new identity, a new loyalty, and a new way of living that would cost them everything.

His invitation has not changed.

Jesus still says today: “Follow me.”
And He still tells us the truth—following Him requires sacrifice. Salvation is free because Jesus paid the full price through His death and resurrection. But discipleship—the daily walk of obedience and surrender—will cost us anything that competes with His Lordship.

In Luke 9:23 (CEV), Jesus makes the call unmistakably clear:
“If any of you want to be my followers, you must forget about yourself. You must take up your cross each day and follow me.”

Following Jesus means letting His voice outweigh every other voice. It means surrendering our agenda for His will. It means choosing obedience when culture opposes truth. It is a daily declaration:
“Jesus, You lead— I will follow.”

THE COST OF LEAVING THE OLD LIFE BEHIND
When Jesus called the first disciples, they immediately left their old lives. Peter and Andrew left their nets. James and John left their father and their business. Matthew left a profitable tax office. They walked away from security, identity, and familiarity.

Why?

Because the One who called them was worth more than everything they left behind.

In the same way, Jesus calls us to walk away from the old life—sinful patterns, destructive relationships, harmful habits, and anything that rules our hearts. Not because He wants to take from us, but because He wants to give us freedom, holiness, and a life empowered by the Spirit.

THE COST OF OBEDIENCE
Obedience is the foundation of discipleship. In John 14:15 (CEV), Jesus says:
“If you love me, you will do what I have said.”

Obedience often requires:

  • Choosing scripture over cultural pressure
  • Walking in holiness when compromise seems easier
  • Saying “yes” to God when His path feels unfamiliar
  • Trusting Him when the next step is unclear

Obedience is not perfection—it is devotion expressed through action.

THE COST OF DYING TO SELF
Jesus taught that a disciple must “die daily.” This means laying down our pride, stubbornness, ego, preferences, and sinful desires.

Dying to self looks like:

  • Surrendering the need for control
  • Letting go of the need for approval
  • Crucifying selfish ambition
  • Rejecting worldly values
  • Resisting sin’s temptations

Every time we die to self, we rise into deeper joy, freedom, and purpose.

Galatians 2:20 (CEV) declares:
“I have died, but Christ lives in me.”

Discipleship means creating space for Jesus to live fully through us.

THE COST OF CARRYING YOUR CROSS
Carrying a cross does not mean enduring random hardships—it means choosing Jesus above comfort, popularity, reputation, or personal dreams.

Carrying your cross may cost you:

  • Social acceptance
  • Popular opinion
  • Comfort and convenience
  • Emotional ease
  • Friendships
  • Dreams you once clung to

Some people will not understand your devotion. Some will resist your transformation. Some may reject you. But Jesus promised that the eternal reward far outweighs any earthly cost.

THE COST OF PUTTING JESUS FIRST
Jesus gave strong words in Luke 14:26–27 (CEV), saying that if anything—family, possessions, comfort, or even life itself—comes before Him, we cannot be His disciples. This is not about loving others less—it is about loving Him most.

A disciple says:
“Jesus, You are first—above my desires, above my dreams, above everything.”

THE REWARD IS GREATER THAN THE COST
While discipleship costs much, the reward is beyond measure. Jesus gives us:

  • A new identity
  • A new heart
  • A forgiven past
  • Purpose that cannot be shaken
  • Strength through the Holy Spirit
  • Peace beyond understanding
  • Joy the world cannot take
  • Eternal life with God

Romans 8:18 (CEV) says:
“I am sure that what we are suffering now cannot compare with the glory that will be shown to us.”

The cost is temporary.
The reward is eternal.
And Jesus Himself walks every step with His disciples.

SUMMARY
Jesus never promised that following Him would be easy—He promised it would be worth it. Discipleship requires surrender, obedience, courage, dying to self, and choosing Jesus above all else. But every sacrifice deepens our faith, strengthens our spirit, and draws us closer to the heart of God. The cost is real, but what Jesus offers is infinitely greater. To follow Him is to find the only life that truly satisfies.

Following Jesus may cost you the world—
but in Him, you gain everything your soul was created for.
