The story of Sodom and Gomorrah is a sobering account of God’s judgment and mercy. Genesis 19 reveals the consequences of unchecked sin, the righteousness of God, and the deliverance of those who remain faithful.
The Arrival of the Angels in Sodom
Two angels, who had previously visited Abraham, arrived in Sodom in the evening. Lot, Abraham’s nephew, was sitting at the city gate when he saw them. Recognizing their importance, he bowed with respect and insisted they stay at his house for the night. At first, the angels declined, saying they would spend the night in the city square, but Lot persisted, knowing the dangers lurking in Sodom after dark.
Lot prepared a meal for his guests, including unleavened bread, and they ate together. However, their peace was soon disrupted.
The Wickedness of the Men of Sodom
Before they went to bed, the men of Sodom—young and old—surrounded Lot’s house and demanded:
“Where are the men who came to you tonight? Bring them out to us so that we can have relations with them.” (Genesis 19:5)
Lot, desperate to protect his guests, stepped outside and pleaded with the men to desist from their wicked intentions. In an act reflective of the cultural emphasis on hospitality, he even offered his two daughters in place of the guests, though his proposal revealed the depths of compromise in his judgment.
The men, however, grew angry and threatened Lot, accusing him of acting as a judge in their city. They surged forward, intent on breaking down the door.
The Angels Intervene
The angels reached out, pulled Lot back inside, and struck the men outside with blindness, rendering them unable to find the door. This divine intervention underscored God’s power and protection over His people.
The angels warned Lot of the impending destruction of the city:
“Do you have anyone else here—sons-in-law, sons or daughters, or anyone else in the city who belongs to you? Get them out of here, because we are going to destroy this place. The outcry to the Lord against its people is so great that He has sent us to destroy it.” (Genesis 19:12-13)
Lot went out to his sons-in-law and urged them to flee the city, but they thought he was joking and ignored his warning.
The Flight from Sodom
At dawn, the angels urged Lot to take his wife and two daughters and flee. Still hesitant, Lot lingered, and the angels had to physically grasp their hands to lead them out of the city. This act of mercy demonstrated God’s compassion, even in judgment.
One of the angels commanded:
“Flee for your lives! Don’t look back, and don’t stop anywhere in the plain! Flee to the mountains, or you will be swept away!” (Genesis 19:17)
Lot, fearful of reaching the mountains, pleaded to flee to a nearby small town, Zoar. The angels agreed, sparing Zoar from destruction for Lot’s sake.
The Destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah
As Lot and his family reached safety, the Lord rained down burning sulfur on Sodom and Gomorrah. The once-thriving cities were utterly destroyed, along with all the inhabitants and vegetation in the plains.
Tragically, Lot’s wife disobeyed the angels’ warning. She looked back, longing for what was left behind, and became a pillar of salt. Her fate serves as a stark reminder of the cost of attachment to sin.
The Aftermath
Lot and his daughters eventually left Zoar and settled in the mountains, living in a cave. The account of what followed reveals further moral struggles, showing the lasting impact of Sodom’s corrupt influence.
