The story of Isaac and Rebekah’s union in Genesis 24 is a beautiful narrative of faith, divine guidance, and the unfolding of God’s promises. It demonstrates God’s sovereignty in fulfilling His covenant with Abraham and ensuring that Isaac, the son of promise, receives a wife who shares in the blessing.
Abraham’s Charge to His Servant
As Abraham grew old, he was concerned about securing a godly wife for his son, Isaac. The continuation of God’s covenant through Isaac depended on Isaac marrying someone who shared Abraham’s faith and values.
Abraham called his most trusted servant and instructed him:
“Put your hand under my thigh and swear by the Lord, the God of heaven and the God of earth, that you will not get a wife for my son from the daughters of the Canaanites, among whom I am living, but will go to my country and my own relatives and get a wife for my son Isaac.” (Genesis 24:2-4)
The servant expressed concern about the possibility of the woman refusing to return with him. Abraham reassured him, saying:
“The Lord, the God of heaven, who brought me out of my father’s household and my native land and who spoke to me and promised me an oath, saying, ‘To your offspring I will give this land’—he will send his angel before you so that you can get a wife for my son from there.” (Genesis 24:7)
The servant agreed and took an oath, demonstrating his commitment to fulfilling Abraham’s charge faithfully.
The Journey and the Prayer for Guidance
The servant set out with ten camels and a selection of gifts, journeying to Aram Naharaim, to the town of Nahor. Upon arrival, he stopped at a well outside the town in the evening, a time when women came to draw water.
The servant prayed earnestly, saying:
“Lord, God of my master Abraham, make me successful today, and show kindness to my master Abraham. See, I am standing beside this spring, and the daughters of the townspeople are coming out to draw water. May it be that when I say to a young woman, ‘Please let down your jar that I may have a drink,’ and she says, ‘Drink, and I’ll water your camels too’—let her be the one you have chosen for your servant Isaac. By this, I will know that you have shown kindness to my master.” (Genesis 24:12-14)
This prayer reflects the servant’s reliance on God for guidance and his trust in God’s providence.
The Answer to Prayer
Before he had even finished praying, Rebekah, the daughter of Bethuel and granddaughter of Nahor, approached the well. She was described as very beautiful, a virgin, and kind-hearted. The servant ran to meet her and asked,
“Please give me a little water from your jar.”
Rebekah responded generously,
“Drink, my lord,” and quickly lowered her jar to give him a drink. Then she added,
“I’ll draw water for your camels too, until they have had enough to drink.”
This act of kindness and hospitality fulfilled the sign the servant had prayed for. He watched her in silence, marveling at how God had led him to the right person.
Confirming God’s Choice
The servant presented Rebekah with a gold nose ring and two gold bracelets and asked,
“Whose daughter are you? Please tell me, is there room in your father’s house for us to spend the night?”
Rebekah revealed her lineage, confirming that she was the granddaughter of Nahor, Abraham’s brother. She also offered him and his camels a place to stay.
Overwhelmed with gratitude, the servant bowed down and worshipped the Lord, saying:
“Praise be to the Lord, the God of my master Abraham, who has not abandoned his kindness and faithfulness to my master. As for me, the Lord has led me on the journey to the house of my master’s relatives.” (Genesis 24:27)
Meeting the Family
Rebekah’s brother, Laban, welcomed the servant and invited him into their home. After providing food and water for the camels and washing the servant’s feet, Laban and Bethuel listened to the servant recount his mission and how God had guided him to Rebekah.
The servant asked if they would allow Rebekah to return with him to marry Isaac. Recognizing God’s hand in the matter, they replied,
“This is from the Lord; we can say nothing to you one way or the other. Here is Rebekah; take her and go, and let her become the wife of your master’s son, as the Lord has directed.” (Genesis 24:50-51)
Rebekah’s Decision
The next morning, the servant asked to return immediately with Rebekah. Her family wanted her to stay a few more days, but they ultimately left the decision to Rebekah. She responded with faith and resolve,
“I will go.”
Rebekah’s willingness to leave her family and homeland mirrors Abraham’s own faith-filled journey when he obeyed God’s call.
The Marriage of Isaac and Rebekah
Rebekah traveled with the servant and her attendants to Canaan. As they approached, Isaac was in the field meditating. When Rebekah saw Isaac, she asked who he was. The servant replied,
“He is my master.”
Rebekah covered herself with a veil, signifying her readiness to become Isaac’s wife. The servant recounted everything to Isaac, who brought Rebekah into his mother Sarah’s tent. Isaac married Rebekah, and she became his wife.
The Bible notes,
“He loved her, and Isaac was comforted after his mother’s death.” (Genesis 24:67)
