A Bible Study Based on the CEV Translation
Remembering the Past to See the Messiah
The books of 1 & 2 Chronicles offer a rich historical account of Israel’s kings, with a special focus on King David, the temple, and the kingdom of Judah. Far from being merely historical texts, these books reveal God’s eternal plan through David’s royal lineage and temple worship, pointing us to Jesus in 1 & 2 Chronicles Bible study as the promised Messiah and eternal King.
From genealogies to temple preparations, from worship to the reign of Judah’s kings, Chronicles confirms Jesus as the rightful heir to David’s throne and the true King whose kingdom will never end.
1. The Genealogy of David and Jesus’ Royal Lineage
1 Chronicles opens with detailed genealogies tracing the descendants of Israel’s tribes, culminating in the line of David:
“David was the son of Jesse.”
— 1 Chronicles 2:13 (CEV)
This genealogy is essential as it affirms Jesus’ rightful place as the Messiah from the royal line of David. God’s promise to David was:
“Your throne will last forever.”
— 2 Samuel 7:16 (CEV)
Jesus perfectly fulfills this divine covenant, reigning eternally as the promised King.
2. David’s Role as the Shepherd King
David’s kingship is described as a shepherd’s care for his sheep:
“David took care of his people like a shepherd takes care of his sheep.”
— 1 Chronicles 11:2 (CEV)
This imagery foreshadows Jesus as the Good Shepherd, who lovingly watches over His flock and sacrifices Himself for their salvation. David’s story gives us a profound picture of Jesus’ caring and sacrificial kingship.
3. Preparing for and Building the Temple: God’s Presence Among His People
In 1 Chronicles, David organizes the Levites and priests, preparing to bring the ark to the temple:
“David gave orders to bring the ark of the covenant to the temple.”
— 1 Chronicles 15:1 (CEV)
2 Chronicles continues by detailing Solomon’s building of the temple, where God’s presence would dwell among His people.
Yet, Jesus surpasses any earthly temple as the living temple where God dwells within us (John 2:19-21). The temple worship described in Chronicles points directly to Christ, the perfect dwelling place of God’s presence.
4. Worship and the Heart of the King
Both 1 and 2 Chronicles highlight worship as central to God’s people:
“David praised the LORD with all his heart.”
— 1 Chronicles 16:25 (CEV)
“The people worshiped the LORD and bowed down.”
— 2 Chronicles 7:3 (CEV)
David and Solomon’s devotion in worship foreshadows Jesus’ perfect worship and His call for us to worship God in spirit and truth.
5. The Kings of Judah: Lessons in Obedience and the Promise of the Eternal King
2 Chronicles recounts the reigns of Judah’s kings, showing the blessings of obedience and the consequences of rebellion. Despite the failings of many kings, God’s promise remains unbroken:
“Jesus is the King whose kingdom will never end.”
— Luke 1:32-33 (CEV)
Jesus fulfills all of God’s promises to David and offers salvation and eternal reign to all who trust Him.
Final Reflection: Seeing Jesus in the Chronicles
The books of 1 & 2 Chronicles deepen our understanding of Jesus’ royal heritage, His role as the Good Shepherd, and the vital place of worship in God’s kingdom. By trusting Jesus—the promised King from David’s line—we find true peace, hope, and eternal life.
