A Bible Study Based on the CEV Translation
Introduction: Living in the Light of Christ’s Return
The letters of 1 and 2 Thessalonians are written by the Apostle Paul to a young, persecuted church in Thessalonica. These letters encourage believers to remain faithful, live holy lives, and find hope in the promised return of Jesus Christ. Paul addresses their questions about death, the Second Coming, and how to remain steady in a troubled world.
In this blog post, based on the Contemporary English Version (CEV), we explore how Jesus is revealed as our Soon-Coming King, the Comforter of the grieving, the Motivator for holy living, and the Judge who will bring justice. The hope of Christ’s return shines brightly across both letters.
1. Jesus: The One We Wait For
“You stopped worshiping idols and turned to God. Then you began serving and waiting for his Son to come from heaven. God raised him from death, and on the day of judgment Jesus will save us from God’s anger.”
— 1 Thessalonians 1:9-10 (CEV)
The Thessalonians turned from idols to serve the living God and wait for Jesus. This captures the Christian life: worship, service, and expectation of the return of Christ.
2. Jesus: The Gospel Center
“Our good news didn’t come to you in words only. It came with power, with the Holy Spirit, and with complete certainty.”
— 1 Thessalonians 1:5 (CEV)
The message of Jesus was not just words—it came with divine power and conviction. Jesus is not just a story; He is a living reality.
3. Jesus: The Judge Who Will Return
“The Lord himself will come down from heaven with a command, with the voice of the chief angel, and with the sound of God’s trumpet.”
— 1 Thessalonians 4:16 (CEV)
One of the most comforting and powerful verses in Scripture—Jesus will personally return, visibly and victoriously.
4. Jesus: The Resurrection and the Life
“We believe that Jesus died and was raised to life. We also believe that when God brings Jesus back again, he will bring with him all who had faith in Jesus before they died.”
— 1 Thessalonians 4:14 (CEV)
Jesus’ resurrection is the guarantee that believers who have died will live again. In Him, death is not the end—it’s the beginning of eternal life.
5. Jesus: The Thief in the Night
“The Lord’s return will surprise us like a thief in the night.”
— 1 Thessalonians 5:2 (CEV)
Though the timing is unknown, believers are called to live alert, watchful lives. Jesus’ return will be sudden and unannounced—so we live ready.
6. Jesus: The One Who Saves Us Completely
“God gave us the promise of salvation by our Lord Jesus Christ.”
— 1 Thessalonians 5:9 (CEV)
Jesus saves us not only from past sins but also from future wrath. He is our complete and eternal salvation.
7. Jesus: The Foundation for Encouragement and Hope
“Encourage each other with these words.”
— 1 Thessalonians 4:18 (CEV)
The truths about Jesus—His death, resurrection, and return—are meant to encourage and strengthen the Church, not frighten it.
8. Jesus: The One Who Will Be Glorified in His People
“When the Lord Jesus appears from heaven with his mighty angels, he will take revenge… but he will also bring honor to his faithful people.”
— 2 Thessalonians 1:7-10 (CEV)
When Jesus returns, He will judge the wicked and honor those who belong to Him. His coming is both a moment of justice and glory.
9. Jesus: The Comfort in Affliction
“God our Father loves us. He is kind and has given us eternal comfort and a wonderful hope.”
— 2 Thessalonians 2:16 (CEV)
No matter how dark the times, Jesus provides lasting comfort and unshakable hope through His love and promises.
10. Jesus: The One Who Will Destroy the Lawless One
“The Lord Jesus will destroy him with his breath and wipe him out when he appears in all his glory.”
— 2 Thessalonians 2:8 (CEV)
Evil will not win. Jesus will conquer the man of lawlessness and establish His righteous rule. He is the triumphant King.
11. Jesus: The One Who Calls Believers to Glory
“God used our preaching as his way of inviting you to share in the glory of our Lord Jesus Christ.”
— 2 Thessalonians 2:14 (CEV)
We are not just saved from wrath—we are called to share in Christ’s eternal glory. His glory becomes our inheritance.
Conclusion: Living in Hope and Holiness
The message of 1 and 2 Thessalonians is this: Jesus is coming again. For the believer, this is not a threat but a promise. It is a call to live in hope, walk in holiness, and stand firm in faith. The return of Christ motivates us to live every day in light of eternity.
