Jesus in 1 John: The Love of God Manifested

A Bible Study Based on the CEV Translation

Jesus, the Love and Light of the World

The First Letter of John, often called 1 John, is one of the most beautiful and profound books in the New Testament. Written by the Apostle John, it addresses early Christians facing false teachings that threatened to distort the truth about Jesus Christ. At its core, 1 John reveals who Jesus truly is: the eternal Word of God, the Light shining in darkness, and the perfect manifestation of God’s love.

This letter urges believers to examine their lives, walk in the light of Jesus, and most importantly, to live a life marked by love — the very love that Jesus modeled and demonstrated through His sacrifice. As believers today, 1 John invites us to know Jesus deeply, to abide in His love, and to share that love with others in a world that desperately needs it.

1. Jesus: The Word of Life (1 John 1:1-2)

“We tell you about the one who has existed from the beginning, the one we have heard, seen, and touched—the Word who gives life.”
1 John 1:1-2 (CEV)

John opens his letter by emphasizing the reality of Jesus Christ — He is the eternal Word of Life who existed from the very beginning with God. This counters early heresies that denied Jesus’ humanity or divinity. John stresses that Jesus was physically present; He was heard, seen, and touched, affirming the incarnation — God becoming flesh.

This means that Jesus is not an abstract idea or distant deity; He is the living Word who brings life to all who believe. When we talk about the Jesus in 1 John Bible study, it’s critical to remember that Jesus is both fully God and fully man, bridging the gap between God and humanity through His life and sacrifice.

2. Jesus: The Light That Shines in Darkness (1 John 1:5-7)

“God is light; there is no darkness in him at all. So if we say that we have fellowship with God but live in darkness, we are lying.”
1 John 1:5-6 (CEV)

Jesus is described as the Light of the World (John 8:12), a metaphor that John uses throughout his writings. Light here represents purity, truth, and holiness, while darkness symbolizes sin and separation from God.

Walking in Jesus’ light means living transparently, confessing our sins, and allowing His truth to transform us. It means rejecting the shadows of deceit, hypocrisy, and sin that can creep into our lives. John reminds us that true fellowship with God requires living in the light, not merely professing faith. This light dispels fear and guilt, offering peace and restoration.

3. Jesus: Our Advocate and Savior (1 John 2:1-2)

“If we make a mistake, we have someone to speak to the Father for us—Jesus Christ, the righteous one.”
1 John 2:1 (CEV)

We all stumble and fall short, but Jesus serves as our advocate—a defender who pleads our case before God the Father. This truth offers profound comfort and assurance. Because Jesus is righteous, His advocacy is perfect and effective.

This means believers don’t live under condemnation but under grace. Jesus not only forgives sins but intercedes for us continually, bridging the gap between God’s holiness and our imperfect nature. He is the ultimate mediator, making reconciliation possible.

4. Jesus: The True Messiah and Son of God (1 John 4:2-3)

“Every spirit that tells you Jesus Christ came as a human is from God. But every spirit that says Jesus didn’t come as a human is not from God.”
1 John 4:2-3 (CEV)

One of the critical warnings in 1 John is against denying the incarnation—Jesus’ coming in the flesh. Early heresies, like Gnosticism, claimed Jesus was not truly human, undermining the entire Gospel message.

John underscores that Jesus is fully divine and fully human—the True Messiah and Son of God. This is essential for salvation because only someone both God and man could atone for human sin. Recognizing this truth protects the Christian faith from false teachings and invites believers into the authentic life Jesus offers.

5. Jesus: God’s Love Made Visible (1 John 4:9-10)

“God showed how much he loved us by sending his only Son into the world to be the sacrifice that takes away our sins.”
1 John 4:9-10 (CEV)

Jesus is the ultimate expression of God’s love. His coming to earth and His sacrificial death were not accidental but the purposeful demonstration of divine love.

God’s love in Jesus calls believers to love one another sacrificially. This love is not merely a feeling but an active, self-giving commitment modeled on Jesus’ example. Living in this love changes relationships, communities, and the world.

6. Jesus: The One Who Overcomes the World (1 John 5:4-5)

“Everyone born of God wins the battle against the world. And the victory that wins the battle is faith.”
1 John 5:4 (CEV)

In a world filled with challenges, temptations, and spiritual opposition, believers are assured of victory through faith in Jesus Christ. This victory is not achieved by human strength but through trusting in Jesus, the risen and victorious Lord.

This truth empowers Christians to stand firm, knowing Jesus has already conquered sin, death, and the powers of darkness. Faith connects us to His victory and sustains us through trials.

7. Jesus: Eternal Life and Relationship (1 John 5:11-12)

“God has given us eternal life, and this life is in his Son. Whoever has the Son has life.”
1 John 5:11-12 (CEV)

The most profound promise in 1 John is the gift of eternal life through Jesus. Eternal life is not just future hope; it is present reality—an intimate, ongoing relationship with God.

Believers possess life because they have Jesus. This life transforms how we view our existence, purpose, and destiny. It offers hope, peace, and joy, anchored in the assurance of God’s everlasting presence.

Practical Application: Living Out Jesus’ Love and Truth

Understanding Jesus in 1 John invites us to a transformative relationship with Him:

  • Walk in the Light: Regularly confess sin and seek God’s forgiveness, living transparently and honestly.
  • Abide in Jesus’ Love: Let His love flow through your relationships, showing kindness, patience, and sacrifice.
  • Guard Against False Teachings: Study Scripture and rely on the Holy Spirit to discern truth from error.
  • Rely on Jesus as Advocate: Approach God with confidence, knowing Jesus intercedes for you.
  • Grow in Faith: Trust Jesus to overcome worldly challenges and strengthen your spiritual walk.
  • Embrace Eternal Life Now: Live with the hope and assurance that comes from being united with Christ.

Conclusion: Jesus, the Heart of 1 John

The letter of 1 John calls believers to know Jesus intimately—as the Word of Life, the Light, the Advocate, and the embodiment of God’s love. It urges a faith rooted in truth and expressed through love, offering hope amid deception and darkness.

By embracing Jesus as revealed in this letter, believers can experience a victorious, joyful, and enduring relationship with God that transforms their lives and communities.
