A Bible Study Based on the CEV Translation
Jesus, the Head of the Church and Source of Every Blessing
The book of Ephesians presents a majestic view of Jesus Christ as the central figure in God’s plan for salvation, unity, and the church. Paul writes to encourage believers in Ephesus—and all Christians—to understand their identity in Christ, the spiritual blessings they have received, and their role in the body of Christ.
In this blog post, using the Contemporary English Version (CEV), we will explore how Jesus brings unity, offers forgiveness, empowers believers, and equips the church for spiritual growth and victory.
1. Jesus Blesses Us with Every Spiritual Blessing
“Christ has blessed us with every spiritual blessing in heaven!”
— Ephesians 1:3 (CEV)
Jesus is the source of all spiritual blessings. Through Him, we are chosen, adopted, forgiven, and sealed with the Holy Spirit. These blessings are not earned—they are freely given to those who are in Christ.
2. Chosen in Christ Before the World Began
“Before the world was created, God had Christ choose us to live with him and to be his holy and innocent and loving people.”
— Ephesians 1:4 (CEV)
Paul reminds us that our salvation was not a last-minute plan. In Jesus, we were chosen before the foundation of the world to be made holy and set apart for God’s purpose.
3. Redeemed Through the Blood of Jesus
“Christ sacrificed his life’s blood to set us free, which means that our sins are now forgiven.”
— Ephesians 1:7 (CEV)
Forgiveness is available only through the blood of Jesus. His sacrifice cancels the debt of sin and reconciles us with the Father.
4. Jesus, the Head of the Church
“Christ is the head of the church, which is his body. He is the very fullness of God, who fills everything.”
— Ephesians 1:22-23 (CEV)
Jesus is not only Savior—He is the Head of the Church. He governs, leads, and nourishes His body, the community of believers. The church exists to reflect His glory on earth.
5. Made Alive in Christ
“You were dead because of your sins. But God was kind. He loved us very much, and so he brought us back to life with Christ.”
— Ephesians 2:1,4-5 (CEV)
Through Jesus, we go from death to life. His resurrection power brings spiritual transformation, raising us from the deadness of sin into new life in Him.
6. Unity Through Jesus: One Body, One Spirit
“Christ has made peace between Jews and Gentiles, and he has united us by breaking down the wall of hatred that separated us.”
— Ephesians 2:14 (CEV)
Jesus is the peacemaker. He unites people of all backgrounds into one family of faith. There is no division in His church—only unity through His Spirit.
7. Rooted in Christ’s Love
“I pray that you… may have the power to understand how wide and long and high and deep Christ’s love really is.”
— Ephesians 3:17-18 (CEV)
Paul emphasizes the incredible, limitless love of Jesus. Knowing His love strengthens our inner being and empowers us to love others.
8. Living a Life Worthy of Christ
“Live as people worthy of the Lord who chose you.”
— Ephesians 4:1 (CEV)
Because of what Jesus has done, we are called to live differently—showing humility, patience, and love, and maintaining unity in the Spirit.
9. Becoming Like Jesus
“Let the Spirit change your way of thinking and make you into a new person.”
— Ephesians 4:23-24 (CEV)
Transformation in Christ is ongoing. Jesus renews our minds and shapes our hearts to reflect His image, helping us to live in righteousness and truth.
10. Jesus Equips the Church for Ministry
“Christ chose some of us to be apostles, prophets, missionaries, pastors, and teachers.”
— Ephesians 4:11 (CEV)
Jesus gives gifts to His people so that the church can grow and mature. Every believer has a role to play in building up the body of Christ.
11. Walk in the Light of Christ
“Live as people of the light and make your light shine.”
— Ephesians 5:8 (CEV)
Jesus calls His followers to shine with goodness, honesty, and truth. In Him, we are no longer in darkness—we reflect His light.
12. Be Strong in the Lord and Put on His Armor
“Let the mighty strength of the Lord make you strong. Put on all the armor that God gives.”
— Ephesians 6:10-11 (CEV)
Paul concludes with a call to spiritual battle. Jesus equips us with truth, righteousness, faith, salvation, and His Word to stand strong against evil.
Conclusion: Jesus, Our Foundation and Victory
In Ephesians, we see the fullness of who Jesus is—Redeemer, Head of the Church, Unifier, and Empowerer. He gives spiritual blessings, forms a holy community, and strengthens us for life and ministry. Through Him, we are not only saved but called to walk in newness, love, and power.
