Jesus in Exodus: The Savior Revealed Through Deliverance and Covenant
An In-Depth Study Based on the CEV Bible
The Book of Exodus is one of the most powerful narratives in all of Scripture. It tells the story of God’s miraculous deliverance of the Israelites from slavery in Egypt and the beginning of their journey toward the Promised Land. But within the familiar accounts of burning bushes, parted seas, and stone tablets lies a much deeper story — one that points directly to Jesus Christ.
The book’s very name, Exodus, means “departure,” but what it represents is far greater: redemption. In Exodus, we witness a foreshadowing of the Savior, Jesus, who comes to deliver not just one nation from physical bondage, but all of humanity from spiritual slavery. From Moses to the Passover lamb, from the manna in the wilderness to the covenant at Mount Sinai, the presence of the Savior is embedded in the fabric of the story.
In this blog post, we will explore how the Book of Exodus, as told in the Contemporary English Version (CEV), foreshadows Jesus in key events, symbols, and characters. Our goal is to see how the Savior is not just a figure in the New Testament, but the central figure of the entire Bible — including Exodus.
1. Jesus Foreshadowed in Moses: The Deliverer of God’s People
Moses is perhaps the most prominent figure in Exodus. He is the one whom God calls to lead the Israelites out of Egypt. But beyond his historical role, Moses functions as a type of Christ — a prophetic picture of the Savior to come.
In Exodus 3:10 (CEV), God speaks to Moses from the burning bush and says:
“Go to the king! I am sending you to lead my people out of his country.”
Like Moses, Jesus was sent by God to rescue His people. But while Moses led Israel out of physical slavery, Jesus leads us out of sin and spiritual death.
Consider these parallels:
- Moses and Jesus were both born under threats of death (Exodus 1:22; Matthew 2:16).
- Moses left the palace to identify with his people (Exodus 2:11-15), just as Jesus left heaven to become human (Philippians 2:6-8).
- Moses acted as a mediator between God and man (Exodus 19:3), and Jesus is the one true Mediator (1 Timothy 2:5).
Though Moses was only a servant in God’s house, Jesus is the Son over it (Hebrews 3:5-6). The role of Moses was always meant to point us to the greater Deliverer — the Savior.
2. The Passover Lamb: A Picture of the Sacrifice to Come
One of the clearest foreshadows of Jesus in Exodus is found in the Passover. Before the final plague, God instructed each Israelite household to sacrifice a lamb and put its blood on their doorposts so that the angel of death would pass over them (Exodus 12).
Exodus 12:13 (CEV) says:
“The blood on the houses will show me where you live, and when I see the blood, I will pass over you.”
This event was not just a historical moment — it was a prophetic shadow. Jesus is the true Passover Lamb, whose blood saves us from eternal death.
As Paul affirms in 1 Corinthians 5:7 (CEV):
“Christ is our Passover lamb.”
Key parallels include:
- The lamb had to be without defect (Exodus 12:5), as Jesus was sinless (1 Peter 1:19).
- No bone was to be broken (Exodus 12:46), a detail fulfilled in Jesus’ crucifixion (John 19:36).
- The blood protected the people from judgment, just as Jesus’ blood cleanses and covers us (Romans 5:9).
The Passover was both a deliverance and a covenant sign — and Jesus would fulfill both meanings in the New Covenant.
3. The Crossing of the Red Sea: A Baptism Into Freedom
When God parted the Red Sea, He made a way where there was no way. It was the final blow to Egypt’s hold over the Israelites and marked the true beginning of their journey to the Promised Land.
Exodus 14:21-22 (CEV) tells us:
“Moses stretched his arm over the sea, and the Lord sent a strong east wind that blew all night and made a dry path through the sea. The wind made the water split, and the Israelites walked through on dry land with a wall of water on each side.”
This miraculous event is later seen in the New Testament as a symbol of baptism (1 Corinthians 10:1-2). Just as the Israelites passed through the water to leave behind slavery, believers in Christ pass through the waters of baptism, leaving behind the old life and entering into freedom in Him.
Jesus is the one who makes this freedom possible — not just from Pharaoh, but from sin itself.
4. The Manna From Heaven: Jesus, the True Bread of Life
As the Israelites wandered in the wilderness, they depended daily on manna from heaven to survive. This miraculous provision was not only life-sustaining — it was a foreshadowing of something greater.
Exodus 16:4 (CEV):
“I will send bread down from heaven like rain.”
Jesus later referenced this in John 6:32-35 (CEV):
“I tell you the truth, Moses didn’t give you bread from heaven. My Father gives you the true bread from heaven… I am the bread that gives life!”
Manna was a temporary provision; Jesus is the eternal one. Just as the Israelites had to gather manna each morning, we are called to come daily to Jesus, the Bread of Life, to be spiritually nourished and sustained.
5. The Tabernacle: God Dwelling Among His People
The detailed instructions for building the tabernacle in Exodus 25–40 may seem purely ceremonial, but they carry deep spiritual significance. The tabernacle was the place where God’s presence dwelled among His people — a physical structure representing divine communion.
Exodus 25:8 (CEV) says:
“I also want them to build a special place where I can live among my people.”
In the New Testament, Jesus fulfills this longing. John 1:14 (CEV) says:
“The Word became a human being and lived here with us.”
The Greek word for “lived” literally means “tabernacled.” Jesus is the ultimate fulfillment of God’s desire to dwell with His people. Through the Savior, God is no longer distant. He is present — fully, permanently, and personally.
6. The Covenant at Sinai: Jesus, the Mediator of the New Covenant
In Exodus 19–24, God establishes a covenant with Israel at Mount Sinai, giving them the Law and setting them apart as His holy people. This covenant included commandments, sacrifices, and a call to live in obedience.
While the Sinai covenant was foundational, it was also temporary and imperfect. It prepared the way for the greater covenant that Jesus would establish — a new and better covenant based on grace and truth.
Hebrews 8:6 (CEV) explains:
“But now Jesus has been given a better job, so he has become the one who mediates a better agreement between God and people.”
Jesus fulfills the Sinai covenant by perfectly obeying God’s Law and offering Himself as the once-for-all sacrifice for sin. Through Him, believers become part of the new covenant, sealed by His blood, offering a restored relationship with God.
Final Thoughts: Seeing Jesus in Exodus
The Book of Exodus reveals much more than Israel’s historical journey — it unveils the Savior’s heart and mission. From Moses’ call to lead, to the Passover lamb, to the wilderness provision, and the dwelling of God’s presence, the entire story points to Jesus.
Understanding Jesus in Exodus strengthens our faith and enriches our appreciation of God’s plan to rescue and redeem. It reminds us that the God who saved ancient Israel is the same Savior who offers freedom and new life to us today.
