A Bible Study Based on the CEV Translation
The Superiority of Jesus
The Book of Hebrews is one of the most theologically rich and Christ-centered books in the New Testament. Its primary aim is to show the supremacy of Jesus over every Old Testament institution, person, and ritual. Whether it’s Moses, angels, the priesthood, or the sacrificial system—Hebrews makes it abundantly clear: Jesus is greater.
Written to Jewish believers who were facing persecution and tempted to return to Judaism, Hebrews is a powerful reminder that Jesus Christ is the fulfillment of the Law, the final sacrifice, the eternal High Priest, and the true rest for the people of God.
In this post, we will explore how Jesus is revealed throughout Hebrews, using the CEV Bible, while drawing out the deep spiritual truths that continue to impact our lives today.
1. Jesus: God’s Final Word (Hebrews 1:1–3)
“Long ago in many ways and at many times God’s prophets spoke his message to our ancestors. But now at last, God sent his Son to bring his message to us. God created the universe by his Son, and everything will someday belong to the Son.”
— Hebrews 1:1–2 (CEV)
Hebrews begins with a powerful statement: while God once spoke through prophets, now He speaks through His Son. Jesus is the Word made flesh—the exact imprint of God’s nature and the radiance of His glory. He is not one of many voices. He is God’s final Word.
2. Jesus: Superior to Angels (Hebrews 1:4–6)
“He had become much greater than the angels, and the name he was given is far greater than any of theirs.”
— Hebrews 1:4 (CEV)
Jesus is exalted above the angels, not merely as a messenger, but as the Son of God. Angels are servants; Jesus is King. He is worthy of worship not just by man but by heavenly beings.
3. Jesus: The One Who Became Like Us (Hebrews 2:14–18)
“We are people of flesh and blood. That is why Jesus became one of us. He died to destroy the devil, who had power over death.”
— Hebrews 2:14 (CEV)
In order to save us, Jesus had to become one of us. He shared in our humanity, faced temptation, suffered death, and now sympathizes with our weaknesses. He is not a distant deity but a present Savior who understands our struggles.
4. Jesus: Greater Than Moses (Hebrews 3:1–6)
“Jesus is much greater than Moses, who was merely a servant, and he was faithful in God’s house.”
— Hebrews 3:3,5 (CEV)
To Jewish Christians, Moses was the pinnacle of obedience and leadership. But Hebrews teaches us that Jesus is greater than Moses, just as a son is greater than a servant. Jesus is not just part of God’s house—He built the house.
5. Jesus: The Great High Priest (Hebrews 4:14–16)
“We have a great high priest who has gone into heaven, and he is Jesus, the Son of God. This is why we must hold on to what we have said about him.”
— Hebrews 4:14 (CEV)
Jesus serves as our High Priest—but unlike the priests of old, He is sinless and eternal. He has entered heaven itself and intercedes for us before the Father. Because of Him, we can approach God’s throne with confidence.
6. Jesus: The Source of Eternal Salvation (Hebrews 5:8–9)
“Jesus learned to obey God by suffering. Then after he had finished suffering, he became the source of eternal salvation for everyone who obeys him.”
— Hebrews 5:8–9 (CEV)
Obedience, even through suffering, defined Jesus’ earthly mission. As a result, He became the source of eternal salvation—a salvation that is perfect, complete, and never-ending.
7. Jesus: Our Anchor and Hope (Hebrews 6:19–20)
“This hope is like a firm and steady anchor for our souls. In fact, hope reaches behind the curtain and into the most holy place. Jesus has gone there ahead of us…”
— Hebrews 6:19–20 (CEV)
Jesus is the anchor of our soul. Unlike worldly anchors that fix to the ocean floor, our hope is anchored in heaven—in Jesus, who entered the Most Holy Place on our behalf.
8. Jesus: The Eternal Priest (Hebrews 7:24–25)
“But Jesus will never die, and so he will be a priest forever! He is forever able to save the people he leads to God, because he always lives to speak to God for them.”
— Hebrews 7:24–25 (CEV)
Unlike human priests who died and were replaced, Jesus lives forever. He holds His priesthood permanently and is always interceding for those who belong to Him. This makes our salvation secure and unshakable.
9. Jesus: The Mediator of a New Covenant (Hebrews 8:6)
“Now Jesus has been given priestly work that is much greater than the work of those priests. He also brings a better agreement from God to his people, based on promises that give us better hopes.”
— Hebrews 8:6 (CEV)
Jesus doesn’t patch up the old covenant—He fulfills it and establishes a better one. Through His blood, we have access to God’s promises, presence, and pardon.
10. Jesus: The Final Sacrifice (Hebrews 9:12–14)
“Christ did not take the blood of goats and bulls to offer as a sacrifice. He took his own blood, and with it he obtained eternal salvation for us.”
— Hebrews 9:12 (CEV)
All the animal sacrifices of the Old Testament pointed forward to Jesus. But unlike them, His sacrifice was once and for all. It didn’t merely cover sin; it removed it.
11. Jesus: The Perfecter of Our Faith (Hebrews 12:2)
“We must keep our eyes on Jesus, who leads us and makes our faith complete. He endured the shame of being nailed to a cross…”
— Hebrews 12:2 (CEV)
Jesus is not only the founder of our faith—He is the finisher. He endured the cross for the joy of redeeming us. Our journey of faith begins and ends with Him.
Conclusion: Jesus Is Better in Every Way
The message of Hebrews is simple but profound: Jesus is better. He is the better Prophet, Priest, and King. He offers a better covenant, better promises, and a better hope. The call of Hebrews is for believers to hold fast to Jesus, persevere through trials, and live by faith.
