A Bible Study Based on the CEV Translation
Psalms – A Hymnal of the Messiah
The Book of Psalms is often viewed as a devotional collection of songs and prayers, expressing the full range of human emotions—joy, sorrow, fear, and hope. But beyond its emotional and poetic depth, Psalms is also rich with messianic prophecy. Many of its verses speak directly of Jesus, the coming King, the Suffering Servant, and the Savior of the world. In this Jesus in Psalms Bible study, based on the CEV translation, we will explore how Jesus is revealed through prophetic psalms, His suffering, His victory, and His eternal reign.
1. Jesus Foretold as the Son of God
“You are my son, because today I have become your father.”
— Psalm 2:7 (CEV)
Psalm 2 speaks of God’s Anointed One who will rule the nations. This is a direct reference to Jesus Christ, whom the New Testament identifies as the Son of God (Matthew 3:17, Acts 13:33). He is the King installed by God to bring peace and justice to the world.
2. Jesus, the Rejected Cornerstone
“The stone that the builders tossed aside has now become the most important stone.”
— Psalm 118:22 (CEV)
This verse is fulfilled in Jesus, who was rejected by the religious leaders but became the chief cornerstone of our faith (Matthew 21:42). Through His death and resurrection, He became the foundation of salvation for all who believe.
3. Jesus in Suffering: The Crucifixion Foreshadowed
“My God, my God, why have you deserted me?”
— Psalm 22:1 (CEV)
Psalm 22 prophetically describes Jesus’ suffering on the cross in remarkable detail, centuries before crucifixion was invented. It speaks of:
- Mocking and insults (Psalm 22:7–8)
- Pierced hands and feet (Psalm 22:16)
- Dividing of garments (Psalm 22:18)
Jesus quoted this Psalm as He hung on the cross (Matthew 27:46), fulfilling its words in real time. This powerful prophecy confirms that Jesus’ suffering was part of God’s redemptive plan from the beginning.
4. Jesus as the Good Shepherd
“You, Lord, are my shepherd. I will never be in need.”
— Psalm 23:1 (CEV)
Psalm 23 is one of the most beloved Scriptures, and Jesus directly refers to Himself as the Good Shepherd in John 10:11. He leads, protects, and lays down His life for His sheep. He restores souls, provides peace in the valley, and prepares a place in eternity for those who follow Him.
5. Jesus, the Eternal King on David’s Throne
“The Lord said to my Lord, ‘Sit at my right side, until I make your enemies into a footstool for you.’”
— Psalm 110:1 (CEV)
This verse is the most frequently quoted Old Testament passage in the New Testament. Jesus is the Lord seated at God’s right hand. He is both King and Priest, ruling forever with justice and mercy. Psalm 110 reveals His divine authority and exaltation.
6. Jesus the Forgiver of Sins
“You are kind, and you forgive our sins.”
— Psalm 86:5 (CEV)
David’s cry for forgiveness echoes the work of Jesus, who forgives all who come to Him in repentance. The Psalms foreshadow the cleansing power of Jesus’ blood (1 John 1:9) and His mercy toward those who seek Him.
7. Jesus as Our Refuge and Fortress
“The Lord is my fortress, my protector, and my deliverer.”
— Psalm 18:2 (CEV)
Psalms repeatedly refer to God as a refuge in times of trouble. Jesus embodies this divine protection, offering peace in the storm (Mark 4:39) and salvation from the ultimate enemy—death itself.
8. Jesus and the Resurrection Hope
“You won’t let your faithful follower rot in the grave.”
— Psalm 16:10 (CEV)
This verse is directly applied to Jesus in Acts 2:31. David, inspired by the Holy Spirit, spoke of the resurrection of the Messiah, who would not remain in the grave but rise to eternal glory. Through Jesus, we too have the hope of resurrection.
Final Reflection: Worshiping the Savior in the Psalms
The Psalms draw our hearts into worship, repentance, hope, and trust—and every Psalm, in one way or another, points us to Jesus. He is the Shepherd, the King, the Suffering Servant, and the exalted Lord. When we sing the Psalms, we’re not only worshiping God—we’re proclaiming the story of the Savior.
