“Hell is being apart from God; but the nature of heaven has been given to us through Christ Jesus our Lord.”
In this teaching, we explore a profound truth: though hell means separation from the Father, heaven’s very essence—God’s presence and power—now dwells within everyone who believes in Jesus. When Christ lives in us, “the kingdom of heaven is within you” (Luke 17:21). Let’s unpack how this promise transforms our understanding of life, death, and eternity.
1. Hell Defined: Separation from God
Before we grasp heaven’s gift, we must understand its opposite. Hell isn’t merely a fiery place; it is the unbearable reality of being cut off from God.
- Hell is being apart from God. Without the indwelling Spirit, there is no life.
- Separation from the source of love and truth is agony itself, for God is the fountain of every good thing.
Jesus warned that apart from Him, we remain in spiritual death—lost, powerless, and without hope.
2. Heaven’s Nature: Given Through Christ
Yet, in the fullness of divine mercy, God has made heaven available now:
“The nature of heaven has been given to us through Christ Jesus our Lord, and He abides with us by the Holy Spirit.”
Because of Christ’s perfect work—His life, death, and resurrection—we are no longer orphans. The very presence of the Father now dwells in our hearts. This is not a distant promise for another realm; it is our present reality.
3. The Kingdom Within
Jesus declared plainly:
“The kingdom of heaven is within you.” (Luke 17:21)
He spoke to those who believe in Him, assuring that all the riches and authority of God’s kingdom are no longer external but internal. To live in faith is to live in God’s own domain:
- Authority: We share Christ’s victory over sin, death, and the devil.
- Provision: Every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places belongs to us (Ephesians 1:3).
- Presence: We are never alone; the Holy Spirit is our Comforter and Guide.
4. Believe and Receive
This kingdom-life is a free gift, yet it requires response:
“What we must do is believe and receive what He has given to us through Christ.”
Faith is not mere mental assent but hearty trust—receiving by faith the Father’s acceptance through His Son. God “so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life” (John 3:16).
- Everlasting life means knowing the Father by intimate relationship with Jesus.
- All the blessings of heaven—peace, joy, righteousness—are bestowed upon those who trust in Christ.
5. The Gift and the Rejection
Salvation is not an arbitrary decree from heaven; it is offered and must be freely embraced. No one is sent to hell by the Father’s will—rather, separation results from rejecting this gift:
“In hell is to be apart from what God has given to us by our own rejection of Him and the free gift which is eternal life through Christ Jesus our Lord.”
We stand or fall by our response to God’s offer. For those who believe, the kingdom is within; for those who refuse, spiritual death remains.
6. Our Responsibility: Submit and Abide
Jesus said, “In my Father’s house are many mansions… I go to prepare a place for you” (John 14:2). But He also commands:
“It is our responsibility to submit to God in Christ and do this as He asks.”
Submission means yielding our minds, hearts, and wills to the rule of King Jesus. As we meditate on God’s Word and obey His voice, the kingdom-life flourishes within us.
7. The Supreme Gift: Eternal Life
God’s greatest gift is undeniable:
“There is nothing more important than salvation in this world… God has given to us everything that we need, and we are to meditate on what He has given to us and rejoice.”
To meditate on heaven’s nature means to continually reflect on:
- God’s love poured into our hearts (Romans 5:5).
- Christ’s righteousness imputed to us (2 Corinthians 5:21).
- The Spirit’s power enabling holy living (Galatians 5:22–23).
This meditation restores hope and aligns our desires with the Father’s will.
8. Our Hope: Sharing in God’s Glory
From the moment we believe, we begin sharing in God’s unending glory:
“Our hope is to share in the glory of God through Christ Jesus our Lord, and that glory has been given to us and is forever ours.”
This glory includes transformation into Christ’s likeness, victory in spiritual warfare, and the promise of dwelling with God forever.
9. Be Filled with the Spirit
Possessing heaven’s nature demands that we be filled continually:
“If we are not full of the Spirit of God, how can we have any part of what is His by nature? We must be one with Him.”
The “finished work” of Christ secures our standing, but only the Holy Spirit produces the experience of heaven within:
- Prayer: Abide in constant communion.
- Worship: Offer praise that invites His presence.
- Obedience: Walk in the Spirit’s guidance daily.
10. Heaven’s Reality Now and Forever
Ultimately, Jesus Christ is “the way, the truth, and the life” (John 14:6). No one comes to the Father except through Him, and no one has true life apart from Him. Heaven’s essence—perfect fellowship with God—begins the moment we believe.
“It is hell to be apart from the Lord God, because He is the way, the truth, and the life, and no one has life apart from Him.”
May this truth penetrate our hearts: though we once walked in darkness, now we walk in the light of Christ’s presence.
Conclusion: Embrace the Kingdom Within
Believer, open your heart and say:
“Father, thank You for giving me the nature of heaven through Jesus. I submit to Your will, receive Your life, and rejoice in the Spirit’s power within me.”
Rest in the certainty that your citizenship is in heaven (Philippians 3:20), and the King of glory dwells in you. Live daily aware of the kingdom’s reality—now and forever.
God bless you in Jesus’ name!
