“Christ sacrificed His life’s blood to set us free, and because of this our sins are now forgiven.”
These words lie at the very heart of the gospel message. It is by Christ’s perfect, once-for-all sacrifice on the cross that every barrier between fallen humanity and a holy God was torn down. No longer do we stand condemned under the weight of our sin; instead, we are invited into freedom, forgiveness, and new life. In this teaching we will unpack what repentance means, why the kingdom of heaven is at hand, and how baptism powerfully seals our union with Christ and ushers us into the Holy Spirit’s transforming work.
1. The Call to Repentance
When Jesus began His public ministry He opened by proclaiming:
“Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.” (Matthew 4:17)
The Greek word metanoia, translated “repent,” literally means “a change of mind.” But true repentance goes deeper: it is not merely intellectual assent to the facts of the gospel, but a decisive turning-away from the old way of life and a wholehearted turning toward Jesus.
- Putting off the old: We lay aside our patterns of selfishness, pride, and bondage to sin.
- Receiving the new: We embrace Jesus Himself, the One who does for us what we cannot do for ourselves.
As Scripture declares:
“To repent is to put off the old, and the new is here—and the new is Christ.”
This radical shift is only possible because Jesus took our punishment upon Himself. His life’s blood, poured out on Calvary, broke the chains that held us captive.
2. A New Creation in Christ
The Apostle Paul paints a glorious picture of life after repentance:
“If anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come.” (2 Corinthians 5:17)
Notice the present-tense reality: you don’t await new creation—you already are one. The moment you trust Christ, everything old about you—your guilt, shame, brokenness—is forever dealt with. In its place stands a new identity:
- A forgiven child of God (Romans 8:1).
- A co-heir with Christ (Romans 8:17).
- A dwelling place of the Holy Spirit (1 Corinthians 6:19).
This transformation happens “through the cross”—not by your effort, but entirely by Christ’s finished work.
3. “It Is Finished”
As Jesus hung on the cross, He cried out:
“It is finished!” (John 19:30).
That two-word declaration is the culmination of God’s redemptive plan. “Finished” translates the Greek tetelestai, a business term meaning “paid in full.” At that moment:
- All our legal debt was settled.
- Every righteous requirement of God’s law was fulfilled.
- The way was opened for us to boldly approach the throne of grace (Hebrews 4:16).
When you believe, you stand not on your own merits, but on His fully sufficient atonement.
4. Learning to Live in the New Nature
Belief in Christ is not a one-time event, but the gateway to a lifelong journey of discipleship. As followers of Jesus, we learn from Him:
“And when we believe in Christ and we’re followers of Christ, we learn from Him and we have this new nature.”
This new nature—rooted in Christ and empowered by the Holy Spirit—begins to bear the fruit of love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control (Galatians 5:22–23). The Holy Spirit indwells every believer, serving as:
- Comforter in our trials (John 14:26).
- Teacher in all truth (John 16:13).
- Empowerer for godly living (Acts 1:8).
No longer must we strive in our own strength; Christ’s life within us is our sufficiency.
5. The Significance of Baptism
Jesus commanded His disciples:
“Repent and be baptized…and you shall be saved.” (Mark 16:16; Acts 2:38)
Baptism is the public proclamation of our inward reality. Going under the water symbolizes burial with Christ; rising up represents resurrection in newness of life:
- Death to sin: We identify with Jesus’ death, admitting we deserve death for our sins.
- Resurrection to righteousness: We rise to walk in the freedom Christ purchased.
Scripture affirms:
“We were baptized in the death and resurrection of Christ—going under in His death and coming up to new life by the power of God.”
This act of obedience neither earns salvation nor adds to Christ’s work; it simply declares to heaven and earth that we belong to Him.
6. Restoration of What Was Lost
The kindness of God is most clearly seen in restoration:
“Restoring that which was lost.”
Before faith, we wander, broken and helpless. But in Christ:
- Our identity is restored. We become sons and daughters of God (Galatians 3:26).
- Our purpose is restored. We are called to bear His image and extend His kingdom on earth.
- Our fellowship is restored. Intimate communion with the Father is ours through the Spirit (Romans 8:15–16).
To be alive in Christ is to experience the fullness of joy and a hope that never fades.
7. Receiving the Holy Spirit
Jesus promised:
“Ask for His Spirit, and He will give it.” (Luke 11:13)
On the day of Pentecost, the Father poured out His Spirit on all who believed (Acts 2:17). In these “last days,” darkness intensifies, but believers are called to shine:
“We are to be a light in that darkness.” (Matthew 5:14–16)
Without Christ, there is no light. But those united to Him reflect His glory:
- Boldly proclaiming truth.
- Displaying Christ-like character.
- Empowering others through gospel witness.
By receiving the Spirit, we enter a partnership with God’s power to live victoriously.
8. Light Versus Darkness
The world spirals deeper into moral and spiritual confusion, yet:
“Jesus Christ is the light of all men.”
Light and darkness cannot coexist. When Christ shines in a heart, shadows flee. Our mission is clear:
- Walk in the light by obeying God’s Word (1 John 1:7).
- Expose darkness through acts of love and justice.
- Illuminate paths for those still groping in error.
In a world desperate for truth, the gospel shines brightest.
9. The Invitation to Salvation
This message is not reserved for an elite few—it is an open invitation:
“Receive Christ and be saved. God bless you in Jesus’ name.”
There is no prerequisite other than faith. Whether you feel distant or overwhelmed by sin, Christ’s arms are outstretched:
- Come as you are. No façade, no pretense.
- Believe in His name. Trust that His sacrifice is sufficient.
- Confess your need. Admit your sin and receive His forgiveness.
10. Living Out the Gospel
Salvation is both a past transaction (“it is finished”) and a present reality (“we are new creations”). Our response after believing includes:
- Obedience: Practicing daily repentance and devotion.
- Baptism: Declaring publicly the reality of new life.
- Fruitfulness: Allowing the Spirit to bear godly fruit.
- Witness: Sharing the hope within us with those still in darkness.
As we do, we embody the very message that set us free.
Where This Leads Us in Christ
Christ’s sacrifice on the cross, His call to repentance, and the powerful symbolism of baptism together form the gateway into an abundant life. By faith, we:
- Lay down the old life of sin.
- Embrace the new life of righteousness.
- Receive the Holy Spirit’s presence and power.
- Shine as lights in a dark world.
No longer are we dead in our trespasses; we are alive in Christ Jesus our Lord. May you receive this truth today, step boldly into baptism, and walk in the fullness of the life Christ has won for you.
