“Then God said to Jacob, ‘Go up to Bethel and settle there. Build an altar to God, who appeared to you when you fled from your brother Esau.’”

Genesis 35 is a chapter of return.
Not return to people.
Not return to comfort.
Not return to the past.
But return to God.
After the trauma of Genesis 34 …
after confusion, grief, anger, shame, and uncertainty …
God speaks.
Not to judge.
Not to condemn.
Not to discard.
But to call Jacob home — spiritually and physically.
This chapter teaches every believer the most important truth:
When you don’t know what to do next — return to where you last encountered God.
Return to Bethel.
Return to the place where God first spoke to you.
Return to the place where you first knew He was real.
Return to the altar where tears were heard
and where identity began.
Because healing begins
where you last knew God was with you.
1. The Voice of God After the Pain
Genesis 34 ended in silence, shock, and unresolved tension.
But Genesis 35 begins:
“Then God said to Jacob…”
God does not wait until:
- The family is healed
- Emotions are stable
- The situation is neat
- Everyone agrees
- Jacob understands everything
No.
God speaks into the mess, into the grief, into the pain.
Because God comes to the broken.
God says:
“Return to Bethel, and build an altar there.”
God is calling Jacob:
Not forward into strategy.
Not sideways into distraction.
Not backward into regret.
But upward into His presence.
The answer to trauma is not movement — it is return.
2. Jacob Leads His Household Back to Holiness
Jacob responds with clarity:
“Get rid of the foreign gods you have with you, purify yourselves, and change your clothes.”
— Genesis 35:2
This is spiritual leadership.
Not force.
Not control.
Not threat.
But guidance toward God.
The household idols had come from:
- Rachel (when she took her father’s teraphim)
- Servants who came from idol-worshiping cultures
- A household trying to mix worship with compromise
Jacob recognizes:
You cannot go to Bethel with the idols of Haran in your hands.
Bethel is the place of:
- Identity
- Encounter
- Worship
- Promise
So Jacob calls the family to:
- Lay down every substitute for God
- Wash off the residue of the old life
- Put on the clothing of renewed identity
This is not behavior control —
This is heart purification.
And the family listens.
There is something powerful about this moment:
Simeon and Levi do not argue.
Rachel does not hide her household gods this time.
No one resists.
Pain has softened the soil of their hearts.
Sometimes suffering opens a door that comfort never could.
3. God Protects Their Journey
“Then they gave Jacob all the foreign gods… and Jacob buried them under the oak at Shechem.”
— Genesis 35:4
He buries them.
Not stores them.
Not hides them.
Not keeps them “just in case.”
He puts them in the ground.
Because what God is calling you to cannot coexist with what God has called you out of.
As the family travels:
“The terror of God fell on the towns around them, so that no one pursued them.”
— Genesis 35:5
The threat was real.
Consequences were real.
Jacob was afraid.
But:
When God calls you somewhere, He will protect your journey to get there.
No one touches them.
No one follows them.
No one avenges Shechem.
The family is shielded by God’s presence.
4. Jacob Arrives — Bethel Again
“Jacob built an altar and called the place El-Bethel.”
— Genesis 35:7
Years earlier, Jacob had named the place Bethel (House of God).
But now he calls it El-Bethel (The God of the House of God).
He no longer worships a place.
He worships the God who met him in that place.
This is spiritual maturity.
First encounter:
“I met God here.”
Second encounter:
“It is God Himself I seek — not the place.”
Your walk with God deepens when:
- You don’t need the feeling of the moment
- You simply need Him
5. Deborah Dies — Quiet Grief Between the Lines
“Now Deborah, Rebekah’s nurse, died and was buried under the oak below Bethel.”
— Genesis 35:8
This verse is tender.
Deborah was:
- A caregiver
- A mother-figure
- The last living connection to Rebekah
Her death means:
- A generation is passing
- Comfort is leaving
- Home is changing shape
And Jacob buries her under an oak called:
Allon-bacuth — “The Oak of Weeping.”
The Bible is honest:
- You can be returning to God…
- And still grieving loss…
Faith does not erase sorrow.
Faith carries sorrow into God’s presence.
6. God Appears Again — Identity Confirmed
“God appeared to Jacob again and blessed him.”
— Genesis 35:9
And God says again:
“Your name is Jacob, but you will not be called Jacob any longer. Your name will be Israel.”
— Genesis 35:10
God already changed his name in Genesis 32.
But now God confirms it.
Why?
Because:
Identity must be affirmed after pain.
Trauma can make us forget who we became.
God reminds Jacob:
- “You are not who you were.”
- “You are not the deceiver.”
- “You are the one who clings to God.”
Then God speaks promise again:
“I am God Almighty… A nation and a community of nations will come from you.”
— Genesis 35:11
Even after:
- Family tragedy
- Rage
- Pain
- Grief
- Loss
- Mistakes
The promise still stands.
Your failures did not rewrite God’s future for you.
7. Rachel’s Labor — Birth and Death Together
On the journey from Bethel, Rachel goes into hard labor.
The midwife says:
“Do not be afraid; you have another son.”
— Genesis 35:17
Rachel names him:
Ben-Oni — “Son of my sorrow.”
But Jacob renames him:
Benjamin — “Son of my right hand.”
Sorrow becomes strength.
Loss becomes legacy.
Pain becomes blessing.
Rachel dies.
Jacob weeps.
The story does not hide pain.
God does not erase grief.
Sometimes promise and pain are born in the same hour.
And God is present in both.
8. The Journey Continues — Isaac Dies
Jacob reaches his father Isaac.
Isaac dies at 180 years old.
And then:
“Esau and Jacob buried him together.”
— Genesis 35:29
The reconciliation from Genesis 33 was real.
Time did not undo forgiveness.
God heals families across chapters, not moments.
What Genesis 35 Teaches the Believer
1. When life breaks, God calls you to return to Him.
Not to answers — but to presence.
2. Healing requires letting go of what cannot go with you.
Idols must be buried, not stored.
3. Grief and faith coexist.
Tears do not mean you lack trust.
4. Identity must be re-affirmed after trauma.
God reminds you of who you are.
5. God’s promise does not end where your pain begins.
Your story continues even through loss.
6. God restores slowly, deeply, faithfully.
Healing is not instant — but it is real.
7. The journey continues, even with a limp.
Your weakness is now where grace lives.
The Invitation of Genesis 35
God is calling you:
Return to Bethel.
Return to where I first met you.
Return to the altar.
Not to earn forgiveness.
Not to prove anything.
Not to restart religious effort.
But to remember who you are
and who I am.
You are not defined by what broke you.
You are not trapped in the trauma.
You are not the name the past gave you.
Your name is Israel.
The one who clings to God.
The one God fights for.
The one God walks with.
The one God remembers.
The one God blesses.
Your story is not over.
