God’s Presence, Not Human Strength, Is the Foundation of Courage
The book of Joshua begins where Deuteronomy ends.
Moses has died. The wilderness generation has passed.
A new generation stands on the threshold of the Promised Land.
Joshua is now called to lead Israel forward.
But the emphasis is clear:
- The mission belongs to God.
- The people belong to God.
- The strength comes from God’s presence, not from Joshua’s ability.
The land ahead has fortified cities, giants, and battles.
But the decisive reality is not the size of the enemies —
it is the presence of the Lord.
1. The Commission of Joshua (Joshua 1:1–5)
“Moses My servant is dead. Now, therefore, arise, go over this Jordan…”
The transition is direct, sober, and unembellished.
No tribute speech.
No nostalgia.
No idealization.
| Reality Stated | Purpose |
|---|---|
| Moses is dead | Leadership passes, God remains |
| Joshua must arise | Obedience requires action |
| Israel must cross the Jordan | Faith becomes movement |
Leadership Lesson
Joshua replaces Moses in role,
not in uniqueness.
The power and authority of Joshua’s leadership rests on:
“As I was with Moses, so I will be with you.” (v. 5)
The same God continues the same mission.
2. The Promise of God’s Faithfulness (1:3–6)
“Every place that the sole of your foot will tread upon I have given to you.”
Note the tense:
- “I have given” — already done in God’s decree
- Yet must still be taken in time
This teaches the mystery of biblical obedience:
| God’s Sovereignty | Human Response |
|---|---|
| God gives | Israel walks into the gift |
| Promise is secure | Participation is real |
| God establishes inheritance | Israel inhabits it by faith |
The mission is not conquest for expansion.
It is receiving the inheritance God already promised.
3. “Be Strong and Courageous” — The Heart of the Chapter (1:6–9)
This command repeats three times:
- v. 6 — Courage to pursue God’s promise
- v. 7 — Courage to obey God’s Word
- v. 9 — Courage because of God’s presence
But Notice Carefully: Courage is not emotional hype.
It is not pep talk.
It is not willpower.
Courage is:
The settled confidence that God is with His people.
Why Courage Is Possible
| Source of Courage | Meaning |
|---|---|
| God’s Promise | The future is held by God, not chance |
| God’s Word | Life is guided by truth, not reaction |
| God’s Presence | We do not walk alone |
Fear is not removed by self-strength.
Fear is displaced by awareness of God.
4. The Central Instruction: Meditate on the Law (1:7–8)
“This Book of the Law shall not depart from your mouth… meditate on it day and night.”
This is the center of the chapter.
- Victory will not come through military strategy.
- Success will not come through aggression or political intelligence.
- The land will not be taken by charisma or force.
The mission stands or falls on the Word of God being:
- Spoken
- Remembered
- Practiced
- Meditated on
- Loved
Biblical Meditation
| Not | But |
|---|---|
| Emptying the mind | Filling the mind with the Word |
| Escape from reality | Seeing reality truthfully |
| Self-focus | God-focus |
Meditation forms:
- Desire (what we love)
- Discernment (how we think)
- Direction (how we act)
Obedience is the fruit of a mind shaped by Scripture.
5. The People Affirm the Covenant Mission (1:10–18)
Joshua calls the people to prepare provisions —
faith is not passivity.
Reuben, Gad, and Manasseh
These tribes have land east of the Jordan, but they agree to fight for the inheritance of their brothers.
| Lesson | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Inheritance is shared | Covenant life is communal |
| No tribe may rest while others struggle | Faithfulness is corporate |
| Unity is part of obedience | God’s people advance together |
The People’s Response
They tell Joshua:
“Only may the Lord your God be with you, as He was with Moses.” (v. 17)
This is the correct understanding.
The success of leadership depends on:
- Not intelligence
- Not charisma
- Not strategy
But God’s presence.
Christ-Centered Fulfillment
Joshua (Hebrew: Yehoshua) means:
“The Lord is salvation.”
In Greek, that same name is:
Ἰησοῦς — Jesus
| Joshua | Jesus |
|---|---|
| Leads Israel into the land rest | Leads God’s people into eternal rest |
| Conquers enemies by God’s power | Conquers sin and death by His own life |
| Obedience brings success | Christ’s obedience brings salvation |
| Carries forward Moses’ covenant | Establishes the New Covenant in His blood |
Joshua is a shadow.
Christ is the substance.
The courage commanded in Joshua is fulfilled in Christ’s abiding presence:
“I am with you always, even to the end of the age.” — Matthew 28:20
Courage is now rooted not in land, but in union with Christ.
Where This Leads Us in Christ
Joshua 1 opens the book with a clear declaration:
- Moses has finished his work.
- Joshua is now appointed.
- The people must rise and cross the Jordan.
But the core message is not about leadership or military advance.
It is about God Himself:
- His promise sustains mission.
- His Word shapes life.
- His presence gives courage.
- His faithfulness continues across generations.
The mission is not to take land by human strength but to enter the inheritance God gives, by obedience shaped through the Word and strengthened by His abiding presence.
Joshua 1 teaches us:
Strength comes not from the self but from the nearness of God.

Eternal Life — Life in God’s Presence and the Miracle of New Birth Through Christ
Eternal life is not a distant hope or a reward waiting beyond this world.
It is the sudden breaking in of God’s presence—
light entering darkness,
love overcoming fear,
the Father drawing His children home.
Many view eternal life as a future destination,
but Scripture reveals something far deeper:
eternal life begins the very moment Jesus calls your name
and the Spirit awakens your heart to the Father’s voice.
This is not theory.
It is the living reality of God dwelling in His people.
Eternal life is a story filled with:
new identity
new desires
new birth
Spirit-filled transformation
freedom from the old life
fellowship with the Father
a life shaped by the presence of Jesus
This is not something you wait for—
it is something Christ gives you now.
• “This Is Eternal Life” — Knowing God Through Jesus Christ 🤍🔥
Jesus does not describe eternal life as endless time
but as knowing the Father through Him.
“To know You, the only true God,
and Jesus Christ whom You sent.” (John 17:3 CEV)
This knowing is relational, personal, intimate—
a life shared with God Himself.
When you trust in Jesus:
your sins are removed
your spirit is made alive
your name is written in heaven
your heart becomes His dwelling place
the Spirit of Adoption calls you His child

And God teaches His children to walk in trust, patience, and surrender,
themes reflected deeply in:

Eternal life is the Father opening the door
and welcoming you in.
• “Take Up Your Cross Daily” — Eternal Life Reshapes the Way We Live ✝️🌿
The gift of eternal life does not leave anyone unchanged.
It calls us into a new way of living—
a life shaped by surrender, courage, and obedience.
Jesus invites His followers to take up their cross daily,
not as punishment,
but as the pathway to true freedom.
The cross breaks the old self
and awakens the new creation.
It leads us into resurrection power
and the fullness of life found only in Christ.
This path of daily surrender is unfolded in:

• “A New Creation” — Eternal Life Transforms the Heart 🌱✨
Eternal life is not only forgiveness—
it is transformation.
Where there was guilt, Jesus brings peace.
Where there was fear, He brings confidence.
Where there was bondage, He brings freedom.
Where there was death, He brings life.
The old life fades away.
A new creation rises in its place—
reborn by grace, shaped by the Spirit,
and rooted in Christ.
This transformation is explored at:

• “The Lord Is My Shepherd” — Eternal Life as Daily Fellowship 🕊️💛
Eternal life is not only a future kingdom—
it is the Shepherd walking with you through every valley.
He leads.
He restores.
He guards.
He comforts.
He carries.
He prepares blessings in every season.
This daily fellowship is revealed in:

And the Shepherd’s voice echoes through all of Scripture,
inviting believers into a life of refuge, strength, and worship:

Eternal life is the presence of God
guiding, strengthening, and sustaining His people now.
• “The Altar and the Foundation” — Eternal Life Rebuilds What Was Broken 🧱🔥
When eternal life enters the heart,
it does not merely forgive—
it rebuilds.
Ezra 3 shows God’s people returning from exile
with wounds, failures, and memories of loss.
Yet the very first thing they restore is the altar—
the place of worship, surrender, and renewed fellowship.
Only then do they rebuild the foundation.
This is what God does in the believer:
He restores what sin damaged,
renews what fear destroyed,
and rebuilds what the enemy scattered.
See this picture of spiritual reconstruction:
