1 Chronicles 16 is the moment toward which everything since chapter 10 has been leading.
- The kingdom has been restored.
- The Ark has been brought to Jerusalem.
- Worship is now the center of the nation’s life.
This chapter reveals what the chronicler most wants the returned exiles to see:
The life of God’s people is sustained by continual worship in God’s presence.
The kingdom is not secured through walls or armies,
but through daily remembrance of who God is and what He has done.
This is not a one-time celebration.
This is the normal way of life.
The Ark Set in Its Place (1 Chronicles 16:1–3)
David prepares a tent for the Ark.
This is not the final temple —
but worship cannot wait for future completion.
Nearness to God is never postponed.
The Ark is placed:
- not in a palace,
- not at the edge of the city,
- but at the center.
The chronicler is teaching:
| God’s presence is not an event.
| God’s presence is the daily center of life. |
|---|
Then David:
- offers sacrifices,
- blesses the people,
- gives bread, meat, and raisin cakes.
This is worship that results in shared joy:
- God’s presence leads to provision,
- provision leads to fellowship,
- fellowship leads to peace.
This is not private religion.
This is a people formed by worship.
David Appoints Worship to Continue Daily (v. 4–6)
David assigns:
- Asaph and his brothers to minister continually before the Ark,
- to give thanks,
- to declare God’s works,
- to sing praises,
- morning and evening,
- every day.
Worship is not occasional.
Worship is not reactive.
Worship is not emotional response.
Worship is rhythm.
The heart is shaped by what it remembers.
So worship trains the heart to:
- remember God,
- love God,
- trust God,
- walk with God.
Israel is no longer simply a nation.
Israel is a worshiping community.
The Psalm of Thanksgiving (v. 7–36)
David gives the first written psalm to be sung continually before the Lord.
It teaches the people how to worship:
1. Remember
“Remember the wondrous works He has done.”
Faith is not rooted in mood.
Faith is rooted in memory of God’s acts.
2. Seek
“Seek the LORD and His strength;
seek His presence continually!”
Worship is not escape —
it is communion with the living God.
3. Proclaim
“Declare His glory among the nations!”
Worship is not private emotion —
it is public testimony.
4. Confess God’s Kingship
“For the LORD is great…
He is to be feared above all gods.”
Worship refuses idolatry —
no other power is ultimate.
5. Join Creation’s Praise
“Let the heavens be glad…
Let the trees of the forest sing for joy.”
The presence of God restores not just people —
but creation.
This psalm is:
- history,
- proclamation,
- instruction,
- and joy
woven into worship that shapes the identity of the people.
Worship Structures Daily Life (v. 37–43)
Asaph and his brothers are appointed for continual service.
Heman and Jeduthun are appointed with instruments for ongoing praise.
David returns to bless his house.
This shows:
- Worship is not just in the sanctuary.
- Worship goes into the home,
- shaping family life,
- work,
- identity,
- memory,
- love.
The chronicler is forming the remnant into a people who do not simply rebuild a city,
but rebuild their lives around the presence of God.
Summary — 1 Chronicles 16

- The Ark is placed in Jerusalem to reorder the life of the nation around God.

The presence of God is the life of the community,
and worship is the posture of that life.
