Psalm 62 — Silence, Stillness, and the God Who Holds the Soul

The psalm opens not with urgency or fear, but with quiet : “For God alone my soul waits in silence.” “For God alone my soul waits in silence.”

You can watch the videos below as an added lesson on how we are Children of God and how to face challenges in the world, or you can just continue reading this study in "Psalm 62 — Silence, Stillness, and the God Who Holds the Soul".

Our Father

A focused encouragement that points your identity back to Jesus and the Father’s faithful love.

Psalm 62 — Silence, Stillness, and the God Who Holds the Soul

The psalm opens not with urgency or fear, but with quiet:

“For God alone my soul waits in silence.”

This silence is not emptiness.
It is not numbness.
It is not resignation.

It is rest.

It is the soul choosing:

  • not to argue,
  • not to defend itself,
  • not to cling to control.

This is the silence of trust.

Faith here is not loud.
It is still.

The psalm does not rush to action.
It stands, waits, rests — because God is enough.

The Rock That Does Not Move

“He alone is my rock and my salvation, my fortress; I shall not be greatly shaken.”

The psalm does not claim the absence of trembling.
It acknowledges weakness — but insists on stability.

The heart may shake.
Circumstances may shift.
Accusations may come.
Enemies may rise.

But God does not move.

To call God a rock is to confess:

  • there is One secure place in the world,
  • one foundation that cannot be broken,
  • one shelter that cannot be breached.

Salvation is not escape from danger.
It is stability in danger.

The Pressure of Hostility

“How long will all of you attack a man to batter him?”

The psalmist is under relational assault:

  • words that tear,
  • plots that destabilize,
  • coordinated pressure meant to break the heart.

“They delight in lies; they bless with their mouths, but inwardly they curse.”

The danger is deception
not open confrontation,
but hidden intent.

This is the pain of betrayal,
the weight of slander,
the ache of being misunderstood or misrepresented.

Yet the psalm does not respond with:

  • defense,
  • argument,
  • retaliation.

It returns to stillness.

Returning to Rest

“For God alone, O my soul, wait in silence, for my hope is from Him.”

The psalm speaks to itself.

The inner life must be addressed:

  • the soul wanders,
  • the mind races,
  • fear whispers,
  • anxiety grips.

So the heart preaches to itself:

  • Wait.
  • Do not run to fear.
  • Do not grasp for control.
  • Hope in God.

Stillness is not automatic.
It is chosen — and sometimes chosen repeatedly.

Stability Reaffirmed

“He only is my rock and my salvation, my fortress; I shall not be shaken.”

The psalm now deepens what it declared earlier.

Before, the psalm said:

“I shall not be greatly shaken.”

Now it says:

“I shall not be shaken.”

The trust has grown.

Stillness has strengthened into certainty.

This is the quiet miracle of waiting:

  • the heart becomes anchored,
  • the fear loosens,
  • trust settles into the bones.

The circumstances have not changed,
but the heart has.

“Trust in Him at all times, O people;
pour out your heart before Him;
God is a refuge for us.”

The stillness of trust is not emotionally frozen.
It is not the suppression of sorrow or fear.

To pour out the heart means:

  • to speak honestly,
  • to weep openly,
  • to hold nothing back.

Silence before God is not silence instead of expression.
It is silence in place of self-defense.

The heart rests, and from rest, it pours itself out.

This is not emotional collapse.
It is safe surrender.

God is the One before whom the heart may unfold itself
without fear of being dismissed, misunderstood, or shamed.

To pour out the heart before God is worship.

The Weightlessness of Human Power

“Those of low estate are but a breath;
those of high estate are a delusion;
in the balances they go up;
they are together lighter than a breath.”

The psalm exposes a truth rarely embraced:

All human power — whether small or great — is weightless before God.

This is not contempt for humanity.
It is a correction to the imagination.

People appear large and threatening.
Their approval or disapproval seems heavy.
Their influence feels decisive.

But when placed on the scales of reality before God,
they do not move the measure.

Fear enlarges man.
Faith restores perspective.

No human is heavy enough to anchor the soul.
Only God can carry that weight.

The Futility of False Trusts

“Put no trust in extortion;
set no vain hopes on robbery.”

Not all violence is physical.
There is also:

  • pressure,
  • manipulation,
  • coercion,
  • emotional dominance.

Do not look for power in domination.

“If riches increase, set not your heart on them.”

Security does not come from accumulation.

Wealth promises:

  • protection,
  • independence,
  • stability,
  • insulation.

But wealth can neither steady the heart nor secure the future.

The psalm teaches:

  • Do not cling to the means of control,
  • Do not rest in what can be lost,
  • Do not seek refuge in what cannot keep the soul.

Refuge is not found in what can be taken away.

The Final Word of the Psalm

“Once God has spoken; twice have I heard this:
that power belongs to God,
and that to You, O Lord, belongs steadfast love.”

Power and love unite in God.

If God were only powerful, the soul would tremble.
If God were only loving, the soul would still fear vulnerability.

But He is both:

  • power that defends,
  • love that holds.

This is the foundation of stillness.

The psalm ends not in argument, not in emotional surge —
but in certainty:

  • God is strong.
  • God is good.
  • God knows.
  • God will act.
  • God will hold the soul steady.

And therefore —
the soul rests.

What We Carry Forward

Psalm 62 teaches the quiet strength of trust.
It shows that faith is not always expressed in loud praise or bold declarations.
Sometimes faith is silence — the calm of a heart that has stopped trying to carry itself.

Stillness is not passivity.
It is confidence in the God who does not move.

The psalm exposes the weightlessness of human power and the futility of placing hope in wealth, status, or self-defense.

Instead, the heart pours itself out before God —
fully, honestly, without pretense —
and finds refuge in Him.

Power belongs to God.
Steadfast love belongs to God.
Therefore, rest belongs to those who trust Him.

In Christ, this psalm reaches its fullness:
He is the immovable Rock,
the fortress that cannot be breached,
the One who holds the soul in perfect peace.
