Our Father

A focused encouragement that points your identity back to Jesus and the Father’s faithful love.

Psalm 90 — God Eternal, Humanity Frail, Wisdom Given

Psalm 90 is the only psalm attributed to Moses.
It stands at the threshold between:

  • the end of Israel’s wilderness wandering,
  • and the ongoing life of the people of God.

It is a prayer shaped by:

  • memory of deliverance,
  • decades of desert suffering,
  • burial after burial,
  • the sight of human limitation,
  • and the enduring reality of God.

This psalm teaches the heart to live with clarity:

  • who God is,
  • who we are,
  • and what wisdom truly means.

God the Dwelling Place of His People

“Lord, You have been our dwelling place
in all generations.”

Before there were:

  • tents in the wilderness,
  • cities in Canaan,
  • temples of stone,
  • sanctuaries of worship,

God Himself was the home of His people.

Home is not a location.
Home is His presence.

This is the first anchor of the psalm:
The identity of God’s people is not rooted in where they are, but in who holds them.

The Eternal God

“Before the mountains were brought forth…
from everlasting to everlasting You are God.”

God does not begin.
God does not age.
God does not fade.

His existence is:

  • unbounded by time,
  • unchanged by the rise and fall of nations,
  • untouched by the passing of generations.

God is not simply older than creation.
He is eternally prior to all things.

The psalm lifts human perspective out of the temporary and locates it in the everlasting.

Humanity Returning to Dust

“You return man to dust
and say, ‘Return, O children of man!’”

The psalm acknowledges without denial:

  • human life is brief,
  • bodies return to the earth,
  • death is certain.

This is not despair.
This is truth.

Truth that frees the heart from illusions of self-sufficiency.

Human life is precious,
not because it is long,
but because it is given.

The psalm teaches us to live as creatures, not as gods.

The Compressed Nature of Time

“For a thousand years in Your sight
are but as yesterday when it is past.”

What feels vast to humanity is a moment to God.

Generations rise and fall.
Empires bloom and wither.
Lives move from childhood to gray hair and into the ground.

But God remains unchanged.

Human history passes like:

  • a dream,
  • a sigh,
  • a whisper.

This is not a dismissal of human life.
It is an invitation to perspective.

We cannot make our lives eternal.
But the Eternal One can give permanence to what He touches.

Sin and Its Consequences

“We are brought to an end by Your anger.”

Here the psalm names the source of death:

  • not random decay,
  • not tragedy without meaning,
  • but the reality of sin before a holy God.

Death is not merely natural.
Death is judgment.

The psalm does not flinch at this.
It does not soften the language.

What is clear:

  • human life is short because of sin,
  • sorrow is real because of separation from God.

This recognition is the beginning of wisdom.

The Brevity of Life

“The years of our life are seventy,
or even by reason of strength eighty.”

The psalm speaks not of loss but of measure.

Human life, however extended, ends quickly:

  • sickness stops strength,
  • age slows movement,
  • time erodes all pride.

“They are soon gone, and we fly away.”

This is not despair.
It is clarity.

The psalm is teaching the heart to see:

  • we do not control time,
  • we cannot preserve ourselves,
  • we must live with intention.

The Heart of Wisdom

“Teach us to number our days
that we may gain a heart of wisdom.”

Wisdom does not come from:

  • experience alone,
  • intelligence,
  • reflection.

Wisdom comes from seeing life as God sees it:

  • short,
  • precious,
  • accountable,
  • purposeful.

To number days is to live each one as:

  • temporary,
  • meaningful,
  • given,
  • guided.

The psalm is not asking for knowledge.
It is asking for a transformed heart.

A heart taught by God to live in light of eternity.

The Plea for Mercy and Renewal

“Return, O LORD! Have compassion on Your servants.”

The psalm acknowledges:

  • we cannot heal ourselves,
  • we cannot restore joy by willpower.

We need God to turn toward us.

Then the great request:

“Satisfy us in the morning with Your steadfast love.”

The psalm recognizes:

  • pleasure fades,
  • accomplishments dissolve,
  • strength diminishes,

but steadfast love sustains the soul.

The morning of every day begins with this prayer:

  • “Give us Yourself,
  • because nothing else is enough.”

The Desire for Lasting Work

“Let the favor of the Lord our God be upon us;
and establish the work of our hands.”

Human work fades.
Human legacy vanishes.
Human achievement is temporary.

But what God establishes endures.

The psalm ends with a request:

  • that our lives would have weight,
  • that our labor would not evaporate,
  • that our days would matter because God is in them.
  • The psalm has shown the vast contrast between God’s eternal life and human frailty, between His unchanging being and our brief existence.
    The question becomes:
How can a life that ends like a sigh have meaning?
How can work that fades be worth doing?
How can a heart that knows it must return to dust not fall into despair?
    The answer is Christ.

    Christ Our Dwelling Place
    The psalm begins:
“Lord, You have been our dwelling place in all generations.”
This finds its fullness in Christ:
He is the One in whom God dwells among us (John 1:14).
He is the shelter of sinners and the rest of the weary (Matthew 11:28).
He is the temple not made with hands (John 2:19–21).
He is the place of belonging for all who come to Him (Ephesians 2:19–22).
To belong to Christ is to have a home that cannot be lost.
Human life may be short, but union with Christ is eternal.

Christ the Eternal One Who Entered Time
“From everlasting to everlasting, You are God.”
    The eternal God entered time,
    took on flesh,
    walked into our brevity,
    felt our weakness,
    bore our mortality.
Christ does not merely understand the shortness of life—
    He lived it.
    He sanctified:
    birth,
    growth,
    labor,
    hunger,
    tears,
    companionship,
    sorrow,
    death.
He walked the path every human walks — but without sin.
The eternal One stepped into our days so that our days could be joined to eternity.

Christ and the Reality of Death
    “You return man to dust.”
    Christ took on dust,
and then rose, so that dust may rise.
Christ does not erase death’s reality—
    He conquers it.
    Because Christ lives:
    death is no longer final,
the grave is no longer victory,
time is no longer a countdown to loss.
Death becomes entry into the presence of the One who is our dwelling place.

    Christ the Teacher of Wisdom
“Teach us to number our days
that we may gain a heart of wisdom.”

    Christ teaches:
not to cling to life as though it were permanent,
not to waste life as though it were meaningless,
but to live in a way shaped by eternity.
He teaches wisdom not merely by instruction,
but by giving a new heart.
    Wisdom is not technique.
Wisdom is loving what is eternal.
Christ makes the heart capable of that love.

Christ the Satisfaction of the Soul
“Satisfy us in the morning with Your steadfast love.”
Christ is the steadfast love of God made visible.
To be satisfied in Him is to:
    live without fear of loss,
    endure sorrow without despair,
    labor without emptiness,
    walk through grief without abandonment.
The soul that is filled by Christ does not require life to be long
    in order to be full.

Christ Establishes the Work of Our Hands
“Establish the work of our hands upon us.”
    Work done for self-glory evaporates.
    Work done for Christ endures.
    Because:
    He is eternal,
    His kingdom is everlasting,
    His purposes cannot be undone.
Nothing done in Christ is wasted.
Even what seems small has permanence.
Christ takes the work of mortal hands
    and gives it everlasting weight.
This is how a short life can be truly meaningful:
    It is lived in Him,
    sustained by Him,
    and continues with Him forever.

    Summary
Psalm 90 sets before us the truth of God’s eternity and our frailty.
Human life is brief, passing quickly like a sigh.
    Death is real and unavoidable.
Wisdom is found not in denying this but in acknowledging it before God.
The psalm leads us to the prayer:
“Teach us to number our days.”
    Life is meaningful when:
    God is our dwelling place,
His steadfast love satisfies the heart,
and He establishes the work we do.
In Christ, this psalm reaches its fulfillment:
    He is our eternal home.
He enters death so we may have life.
He gives wisdom to the heart.
He makes our brief days bear eternal fruit.
Because Christ lives, a fragile life can be a holy life,
a short life can be a full life,
and a human life can be a life that truly matters.
