You can watch the videos below as an added lesson on how we are Children of God and how to face challenges in the world, or you can just continue reading this study in "Psalm 99 — The Holy King Reigning in Justice".

Our Father

A focused encouragement that points your identity back to Jesus and the Father’s faithful love.

Psalm 99 — The Holy King Reigning in Justice

Psalm 99 is a vision of God as King —
a King whose reign inspires awe, not familiarity.
The psalm begins with command and response:

“The LORD reigns; let the peoples tremble!”

This trembling is not terror that flees,
but reverence that bows.
It is the recognition that:

  • God is not equal to us,
  • not safe in our control,
  • not manageable by human thought,
  • not small enough to be handled like an idea.

He is holy, and therefore other.

The psalm calls the creature to acknowledge the Creator.

Enthroned Above All

“He sits enthroned upon the cherubim; let the earth quake!”

The image is drawn from the mercy seat above the ark of the covenant,
where the glory of God dwelt between the cherubim.

This throne is:

  • invisible,
  • unassailable,
  • eternal.

“Cherubim” are not decorative ornaments.
They symbolize the guardians of God’s holiness —
the reminder that access to God is not casual.

To say God is enthroned above the cherubim is to confess:

  • His rule is ancient,
  • His authority is absolute,
  • His holiness is incomparable.

Before Him, the earth itself responds with trembling.

The Exalted God of Zion

“The LORD is great in Zion; He is exalted over all the peoples.”

Zion is the place where God makes His presence known.
Not because God is confined to a location,
but because He chooses to draw near in grace.

The greatness of God is not local.
His reign is:

  • universal,
  • unbounded,
  • ruling over all peoples, nations, and rulers.

The psalm lifts the eyes above the narrow world of human power
and reveals the King whose rule encompasses all history.

The Praise of the Holy Name

“Let them praise Your great and awesome name!”

Worship begins with recognition:

  • God’s name is not common.
  • His being is not ordinary.
  • His presence is not to be approached without reverence.

The psalm repeats the refrain:

“Holy is He.”

This is the central declaration of Psalm 99.

Holiness is not merely moral purity —
it is God’s absolute otherness:

  • infinitely above,
  • infinitely beyond,
  • yet mercifully willing to dwell with His people.

Holiness is the beauty of His uniqueness.

The King Who Loves Justice

“The King in His might loves justice.”

Power and justice rarely coexist in human rulers.
Strength tends to corrupt.
Authority tends to bend toward self-gain.

But God’s might expresses His righteousness, not self-interest.

His rule is not arbitrary.
His authority is not brute force.
His decrees are not partial.

He loves justice:

  • because He is just,
  • because truth is His nature,
  • because righteousness is His delight.

He establishes what is good
because He is the good.

Justice Established Among His People

“You have established equity;
You have executed justice and righteousness in Jacob.”

God’s justice is not abstract.
It is enacted in history:

  • delivering His people,
  • disciplining them,
  • restoring them,
  • upholding truth,
  • exposing corruption.

The psalm teaches that obedience is the fruit of recognizing His rule.
Worship is not music alone — it is submission to the God who is right.

Worship at His Footstool

“Exalt the LORD our God; worship at His footstool!”

The footstool is the place of lowliness,
the ground just before the holy throne.

To worship at the footstool is to:

  • kneel,
  • humble oneself,
  • acknowledge our place as creature before Creator.

The psalm shapes the posture of the soul:

  • not pride,
  • not presumption,
  • not casual familiarity,
  • but reverence.

The Witness of Moses, Aaron, and Samuel

“Moses and Aaron were among His priests,
Samuel also was among those who called upon His name.”

These are:

  • the mediator of the covenant (Moses),
  • the high priest (Aaron),
  • the prophet and intercessor (Samuel).

They:

  • called,
  • were answered,
  • stood in God’s presence,
  • heard His voice,
  • obeyed His word.

The psalm reminds that:

  • God draws near to those who seek Him,
  • God speaks to those who obey Him,
  • God forgives those who confess to Him.

Yet even the forgiven were disciplined:

“You were a forgiving God to them,
but an avenger of their wrongdoings.”

Forgiveness does not erase holiness.
Grace does not nullify righteousness.
God pardons — and God purifies.

The Call Repeated: Exalt and Worship

“Exalt the LORD our God,
and worship at His holy mountain.”

The psalm ends where it began:

  • worship grounded in holiness,
  • reverence shaped by truth,
  • the soul bowing low before the King.

“For the LORD our God is holy.”

This is not a warning.
It is a declaration of glory.

Holiness is not threat to the one who bows —
it is the joy of the one who knows God.

The holiness, justice, and majesty of Psalm 99 find their fullness in Christ.
He is not merely an example of holiness —
He is holiness in human flesh.

He is not merely one who teaches justice —
He is the foundation of justice.

He is not simply a mediator like Moses, Aaron, or Samuel —
He is the true Mediator, in whom God and humanity are brought together.

Psalm 99 lifts our eyes upward —
Christ is the One we see.

Christ Enthroned Above All

“He sits enthroned upon the cherubim.”

On the ark of the covenant, God’s glory rested between the cherubim.
That presence was veiled. Seen only through cloud and fire.
Approached only through priestly blood.

But in Christ, the throne is revealed.

  • Not behind a curtain.
  • Not in shadow.
  • Not in types and symbols.

He is the glory of God dwelling among us (John 1:14).

He does not become holy by enthronement.
He is enthroned because He is holy.

His reign is:

  • eternal,
  • rightful,
  • unchallengeable.

Before Him, the earth trembles —
not in terror, but in recognition of truth.

Christ the Perfect King of Justice

“The King in His might loves justice.”

Christ does not wield power to dominate.
He wields power to restore.

Every act of Christ’s earthly ministry was justice expressed as love:

  • restoring sight,
  • forgiving sin,
  • lifting the crushed,
  • binding the broken,
  • exposing what destroys life.

His justice is not merely legal — it is healing.

His judgment is not the destruction of sinners but the destruction of sin.

Where Christ reigns, what is wrong begins to be made right.

Christ the True Mediator

Psalm 99 names:

  • Moses — mediator of the covenant,
  • Aaron — priest who interceded with sacrifices,
  • Samuel — prophet who called upon God for the people.

Each stood between God and the people.
Each mediated God’s presence.

But each was limited:

  • Moses could not bear sin.
  • Aaron needed sacrifices for himself.
  • Samuel’s intercession was partial and temporary.

Christ is:

  • the perfect sacrifice,
  • the eternal Priest,
  • the final Mediator,
  • the Word made flesh,
  • the One who stands forever between God and humanity.

He is the way into the presence of the Holy One.

Christ the One Who Forgives and Purifies

“You were a forgiving God to them,
but an avenger of their wrongdoings.”

In God, forgiveness never means moral indifference.
He forgives and He purifies.

At the cross:

  • sin is judged,
  • mercy is given,
  • holiness is upheld,
  • forgiveness is secured.

Christ does not merely cancel guilt —
He breaks the power of sin.

Forgiveness without transformation is incomplete.
Christ grants both:

  • pardon and renewal,
  • cleansing and restoration,
  • justification and sanctification.

Christ the Revelation of Holiness

The psalm repeats:

“Holy is He.”
“Holy is He.”
“For the LORD our God is holy.”

Holiness is not cold.
Not distant.
Not severe.

It is the radiant beauty of God’s pure love.

In Christ:

  • holiness approaches the sinner,
  • holiness cleanses without destroying,
  • holiness heals without diminishing,
  • holiness draws near and makes the unclean clean.

The holy mountain is no longer a piece of earth.
It is the presence of Christ Himself.

To worship at His footstool is to kneel before the One who gives life.

A Final Word of Faith

Psalm 99 proclaims God as the Holy King:

  • enthroned above all,
  • ruling in justice,
  • faithful in mercy,
  • worthy of fear and praise.

It reveals worship as reverent kneeling, not casual familiarity.
It shows forgiveness and holiness held together, not separated.
It remembers the mediators of old and their prayers.

In Christ, this psalm is fulfilled:

  • He is the enthroned presence of God.
  • He is the true King whose power is righteousness.
  • He is the perfect Mediator who brings us near.
  • He is the One who forgives and purifies.
  • He is holiness made visible, approachable, and life-giving.

The psalm calls the soul to:

  • bow low,
  • acknowledge truth,
  • love righteousness,
  • hate evil,
  • worship in reverence,
  • rejoice in His nearness.

The Lord our God is holy —
and His holiness is our peace.
