The truest identity a person can have is to become a child of God.

We Become Children of God Through Jesus

John 1:12 says:

“Yet some people accepted him and put their faith in him. So he gave them the right to be the children of God.” (CEV)

Becoming a child of God is not something we earn through good behavior.
It is not something we inherit because of our family background.
It is not something we achieve through religious effort.

It is something we receive through faith in Jesus Christ.

The moment you trust in Jesus — who He is and what He has done — your identity changes. You are born again into a new spiritual family.

Jesus explains this in John 3:7:

“Don’t be surprised when I say that you must be born from above.” (CEV)

Being a child of God means you have been given a new life, a new identity, and a new relationship with God.

God Is Not Just a Judge — He Is a Father

Romans 8:15–16 tells us:

“God’s Spirit doesn’t make us slaves who are afraid of him. Instead, we become his children and call him our Father.” (CEV)
“God’s Spirit makes us sure that we are his children.” (CEV)

Through Jesus, God does not just forgive you.
He adopts you.

Adoption means:

  • You are wanted
  • You are chosen
  • You are valued
  • You belong

God does not regret choosing you.
He does not accept you half-heartedly.
He delights in you as His child.

Zephaniah 3:17 says:

“The LORD your God is with you. He will celebrate and sing because of you.” (CEV)

Your Father rejoices over you.

What Changes When You Are a Child of God

1. You Are Fully Loved

God’s love is not conditional or fragile.

1 John 3:1 says:

“Think how much the Father loves us. He lets us be called his children, as we truly are.” (CEV)

You are not striving for His love — you are living from it.

2. You Are Fully Forgiven

Your past no longer defines you.

1 John 1:9 says:

“If we confess our sins, he will forgive our sins and cleanse us.” (CEV)

Shame does not speak for you anymore.
Jesus does.

3. You Belong

You no longer walk through life alone or uncertain.

“I will be your Father, and you will be my sons and daughters.”
— 2 Corinthians 6:18 (CEV)

You have a Father, and you have a family.

4. The Holy Spirit Lives in You

God is not far away — He is present within you.

Galatians 4:6 says:

“God sent the Spirit of his Son into our hearts, and the Spirit makes us call out, ‘Father!’” (CEV)

The Holy Spirit reminds you who you are when the enemy lies.

Living as a Child of God Daily

Being a child of God is not just a truth to know, but a life to live.

1. Reject the Enemy’s Lies

The enemy says:

  • “You are your past.”
  • “God is disappointed in you.”
  • “You are not really forgiven.”

God says:

  • You are mine. (Isaiah 43:1)
  • Nothing can separate you from My love. (Romans 8:38–39)
  • You are a new creation. (2 Corinthians 5:17)

You must answer lies with truth.

2. Pray as a Child, Not a Stranger

Jesus teaches us to say:

“Our Father in heaven…” (Matthew 6:9, CEV)

Children come freely.
Children come honestly.
Children come boldly.

You do not have to impress God.
You simply come.

3. Grow to Look Like Your Father

Children resemble the one who raises them.

Ephesians 5:1 says:

“Do as God does. After all, you are his dear children.” (CEV)

The more time you spend with your Father:

  • The softer your heart becomes
  • The clearer your purpose becomes
  • The more you reflect Jesus

This is what the Bible calls sanctification — growing into the person God created you to be.

Identity Must Be Fed

Your identity grows stronger when you:

  • Read Scripture daily
  • Pray with honesty
  • Worship intentionally
  • Spend time with believers
  • Confess sin quickly
  • Serve and love others

Identity in Christ is lived, not just believed.

A Call to Return Home

Maybe you know the truth, but your heart has wandered.
Maybe shame makes you feel distant.
Maybe disappointment has silenced your prayer life.
Maybe the world has numbed your love for God.

Your Father is not angry at you —
His heart is calling you home.

Luke 15:20 (CEV):

“While the son was still a long way off, his father saw him and felt sorry for him. He ran to his son and threw his arms around him.”

God runs to returning children.

Just turn back.

Summary: What Does It Mean to Be a Child of God?

Every person longs to belong. We are born with a deep desire to be seen, known, valued, and loved without fear of rejection. Many try to build identity through success, relationships, appearance, or approval — but identity built on anything temporary eventually falls apart. The Bible offers a far better, unshakable identity: becoming a child of God.

John 1:12 (CEV) says,

“Yet some people accepted him and put their faith in him. So he gave them the right to be the children of God.”

Becoming a child of God is not something we earn through good behavior, religious effort, or personal worthiness. It is something we receive when we place our faith in Jesus Christ. The moment we trust Jesus as Lord and Savior, God gives us a new identity — we are no longer separated, lost, or spiritually orphaned. We are adopted into God’s family.

Romans 8:15 (CEV) explains:

“God’s Spirit doesn’t make us slaves who are afraid of him. Instead, we become his children and call him our Father.”

To be a child of God means that God is not just Judge, Creator, or King — He is Father. A Father who loves, welcomes, protects, guides, and delights in His children. He does not tolerate us; He chooses us. He does not love us based on performance. His love is steady and secure.

1 John 3:1 (CEV) says,

“Think how much the Father loves us. He lets us be called his children, as we truly are.”

This identity changes everything.

What Changes When You Become a Child of God

  1. You Are Loved Fully and Completely
God’s love is not conditional. He doesn’t love you more on your good days and less on your bad days. You don’t have to earn His approval — you already have it in Christ.
  2. You Are Fully Forgiven
Your past no longer defines you. When we confess our sin, God forgives and cleanses us (1 John 1:9). Shame no longer speaks for you — Jesus does.
  3. You Belong to God
    2 Corinthians 6:18 (CEV) says,

“I will be your Father, and you will be my sons and daughters.”
You are not alone. You are not rejected. You are not unwanted. You belong to God.

  1. The Holy Spirit Lives in You
God places His Spirit inside of you to guide, comfort, strengthen, and remind you who you are (Romans 8:16). When doubts come, the Spirit confirms: You are God’s child.

Living as a Child of God

Being a child of God is not just a truth to believe; it’s a life to live.

  • Reject the lies of the enemy who wants to steal your identity.
  • Pray to God as Father, not as someone distant or hard to please.
  • Spend time with God in Scripture and prayer, because children grow to resemble the one who loves and raises them.
  • Love others — because children of God reflect the love of their Father.

Ephesians 5:1 (CEV) says,

“Do as God does. After all, you are his dear children.”

Identity grows stronger through:

  • Reading God’s Word
  • Honest prayer
  • Worship
  • Fellowship with believers
  • Confession and repentance
  • Serving others with love

This is not about trying harder.
It is about remaining close to the Father who transforms us from the inside out.

The Invitation to Come Home

Some reading this may already believe — but feel distant.
Some may love God — but feel weighed down by failure.
Some may be searching — longing for peace and purpose.

Your Father is not pushing you away.
He is calling you closer.

In the story of the prodigal son, Jesus tells us the Father ran toward His returning child (Luke 15:20, CEV). God runs to welcome His children home.

A Simple Prayer

Father, thank You for loving me. Thank You for making me Your child through Jesus. Remind me daily who I am in You. Help me live from Your love, not for it. I belong to You. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
