Obadiah is short…
but it is not small.
It is one of those messages that feels like a door slamming shut on pride
and opening wide for the wounded. 🕯️
Because Obadiah speaks into a moment when people were watching disaster
and treating it like entertainment.
Watching a neighbor fall
and calling it “deserved.”
Watching a brother bleed
and calling it “justice.”
Standing near the pain
and feeling safe because the pain belonged to someone else. 😔
And if that sounds ancient, it isn’t.
The human heart still has that sickness.
We still feel tempted to measure ourselves against someone else’s collapse.
We still feel tempted to whisper,
“At least I’m not like that…”
We still feel tempted to turn other people’s calamity into our comfort. 🧱
Obadiah does not let that live.
He brings God’s light into the hidden corners where pride hides and says,
You are not safe because you stand on high ground.
You are not righteous because you stood near the fire and did not get burned.
You are not innocent because you watched and didn’t swing the sword.
Sometimes the sin is not the punch.

Obadiah is God addressing the kind of evil that likes to keep its hands clean
while its heart celebrates destruction.
And the reason this matters is because pride is not just an attitude.
Pride is a spirit that makes you forget you need mercy.
Pride teaches your soul to stand over others instead of kneeling before God.
Pride makes you think your safety is your skill.
Your success is your superiority.

No.
Your strength is not your fortress.
Your mountains are not your savior.

I will not let you build a throne out of your pride.

You may not be able to fight back.

Because the truth is…
we have all been Edom in some way.
We have all had moments where we felt secretly pleased when someone else fell.
We have all had moments where we watched pain and stayed neutral.
We have all had moments where compassion felt inconvenient.
We have all had moments where pride felt safer than mercy. 😔
So Obadiah is not only a prophecy “about them.”
It is a mirror “for us.”
Not a mirror to shame you…
a mirror to save you.
Because the Lord is not only correcting nations.
He is rescuing hearts.
He is pulling pride out by the roots before it becomes your identity.
He is calling you back to the kind of humility that can actually love. 🌿🕯️

Obadiah’s message is directed at Edom, a people connected to Esau, and it confronts how Edom responded when Jerusalem was devastated.
Instead of helping…
they stood back.

they gloated.

You can sin by what you do…
and you can sin by what you celebrate.

There is a kind of pride that doesn’t look loud.

It looks like standing at a distance and saying,
“That’s not my problem.”
But Obadiah shows the Lord does not bless detached hearts that enjoy other people’s pain.
He does not honor the one who stands close enough to benefit
but far enough to deny responsibility. 😔
So Obadiah becomes a call to real spiritual maturity:
• Don’t laugh at what breaks God’s heart 💧
• Don’t treat another person’s fall like proof you’re better 🧱

• Don’t build your identity on being “above” the broken 🙌
Because the Lord is near to the brokenhearted…
and pride is allergic to the brokenhearted.
Pride always wants distance.

Not the justice of human revenge…

Not because justice doesn’t matter…
but because God’s justice is clean.
It doesn’t stain your soul.

Edom lived in strongholds.
High places.
Places that felt untouchable.

High ground can become a false god.

Sometimes God lets your “high place” crumble
because He refuses to let it replace Him.
Sometimes God pulls the rug
because He is rescuing you from worshiping the floor.

Healing From Betrayal And Learning Mercy Again 💧🕯️
Obadiah is also for the heart that has been wounded by family conflict.
Because Edom and Israel are not strangers.
They’re relatives.
That makes the betrayal heavier.
And some of the deepest wounds come from people who should have cared.
People who knew your story.
People who shared your blood, your history, your community.
People who saw you fall and did not reach out. 😔
If that’s your story, Obadiah does not tell you to pretend it didn’t hurt.
It tells you God saw it.
And then it calls you to a miracle:
Don’t let betrayal turn you into bitterness.
Don’t let cruelty train your heart to become cruel.
Don’t let pride in others create pride in you.

• Lord, let Your kingdom rule my reactions 👑
Because the kingdom of the Lord is not built on the collapse of others.
It is built on truth.
On humility.
On righteousness.
On mercy.
On a God who reigns without cruelty. 🕯️
And that is the final promise that makes Obadiah shine:
The Lord will reign.
Not pride.

Not betrayal.
