A Study in Mark 5:1–25

Mark 5:1–25 is where Jesus steps onto a shoreline and everything that has been chained, tormented, and buried in darkness begins to break. A storm has just been silenced, and now a storm inside a man is about to be silenced too. Jesus does not only calm seas—He calms souls.

A Study in Mark 5:1–25

Mark 5:1–25 is where Jesus steps onto a shoreline and everything that has been chained, tormented, and buried in darkness begins to break. 🌊🕯️
A storm has just been silenced, and now a storm inside a man is about to be silenced too. Jesus does not only calm seas—He calms souls. ✝️🕯️

This passage shows the authority of Jesus over three kinds of bondage:

  • spiritual bondage that dehumanizes and isolates 🌫️⛓️
  • social bondage that treats people like problems instead of people 🏚️
  • fear bondage that believes death, demons, or despair get the final word ⚠️

And right in the middle of all of it, the discipleship truth becomes clear:

When Jesus delivers you, you do not only “get better.” You get your life back. 🕯️
Jesus Christ is our righteousness. ✝️🕯️

Mark 5:1 Meaning 🌊🕯️
They came to the other side of the lake, to the region of the Gerasenes.

Jesus crosses the water on purpose. 🕯️
This is not a sightseeing trip. He goes into a region marked by Gentile influence and spiritual darkness, showing that His kingdom is not confined to “comfortable” places.

Discipleship truth 🕯️
Following Jesus will sometimes bring you into places you would avoid—but where His mercy is about to win.

Christ connection ✝️
Jesus is the King whose authority reaches beyond borders, breaking darkness wherever He goes.

Mark 5:2 Meaning 🌫️⛓️
As soon as Jesus got out of the boat, a man with an evil spirit came from the tombs to meet Him.

The meeting is immediate. 🌫️
This man lives among tombs—places of death, isolation, and uncleanness. The picture is heavy: a living man dwelling among signs of death.

Yet notice the mercy: Jesus steps onto the shore and the oppressed man runs toward Him. Even in chaos, there is movement toward the Savior.

Discipleship truth 🕯️
Darkness may drive people into isolation, but Jesus still receives them when they come.

Christ connection ✝️
Jesus does not fear spiritual darkness. Darkness must react to Him.

Mark 5:3 Meaning 🏚️⛓️
The man lived among the tombs, and no one could keep him tied up anymore, not even with chains.

This is not simply “bad behavior.” This is bondage. ⛓️
He is unmanageable, untamed, and unsafe—yet the deeper tragedy is that he is unreachable by human strength.

Chains failed because chains cannot heal. Chains can restrain for a moment, but they cannot restore the soul.

Discipleship truth 🕯️
Human solutions cannot fix spiritual bondage. Only Jesus can restore what darkness breaks.

Christ connection ✝️
Jesus is the Deliverer who does what chains never can: He sets captives free.

Mark 5:4 Meaning 💥⛓️
He had often been chained hand and foot, but he tore the chains apart and broke the irons. No one was strong enough to control him.

Repeated attempts failed. 💥
This verse exposes how desperate the situation is: nobody is strong enough.

That sentence is meant to prepare your heart for the next truth: Jesus is strong enough. 👑🕯️
Where humans reach their limit, Jesus begins.

Discipleship truth 🕯️
When you finally stop trusting strength, you are ready to trust the Savior.

Christ connection ✝️
Jesus is the stronger One who enters impossible situations with authority.

Mark 5:5 Meaning 😭🩸
Night and day, he wandered among the tombs and hills, screaming and cutting himself with stones.

This is torment without rest. 🌫️
He is not only dangerous—he is suffering.

Mark shows you the cruelty of oppression: it does not only destroy relationships; it destroys the person from the inside. The cutting reveals pain, self-harm, and desperation.

This is where disciples need tenderness: the Bible is not mocking his condition. It is revealing the darkness Jesus came to defeat.

Discipleship truth 🕯️
Do not treat tormented people as entertainment or disgust. Jesus sees suffering and moves toward it with power and mercy.

Christ connection ✝️
Jesus enters a world of real anguish to bring real deliverance and real peace.

Mark 5:6 Meaning 🏃‍♂️🕯️
When he saw Jesus in the distance, he ran and bowed down in front of Him.

This is one of the most striking pictures: the man runs and bows. 🕯️
Even before full deliverance, something is happening—Jesus is drawing the oppressed toward Himself.

The bowing shows that the spiritual realm recognizes authority. Darkness does not casually approach Jesus. It reacts.

Discipleship truth 🕯️
When you are desperate, run to Jesus. The first step toward freedom is coming near.

Christ connection ✝️
Jesus is Lord. Even hostile spirits cannot ignore His authority.

Mark 5:7 Meaning 🌫️⚠️
The man screamed, “Jesus, Son of the Most High God! What do you want with me? I beg you in God’s name, don’t torture me!”

The words are intense and fearful. 🌫️
Notice the title: “Son of the Most High God.” The truth is spoken, but not with love—this is recognition mixed with terror.

Darkness knows it is losing ground. The begging reveals something: evil is not brave in the presence of Christ. It is threatened.

Discipleship truth 🕯️
Not every confession of Jesus is saving faith. Saving faith bows in surrender, not merely in fear.

Christ connection ✝️
Jesus is the Son of God whose presence forces darkness to acknowledge His rule.

Mark 5:8 Meaning 🛑🕯️
Jesus had already said, “Come out of this man, you evil spirit!”

Jesus speaks directly and simply. 🕯️
No rituals. No fear. No confusion.

This is kingly authority: a command and darkness must obey. The deliverance begins with the word of Christ—because the kingdom advances by the voice of the King.

Discipleship truth 🕯️
Freedom begins where Jesus’ word is received and obeyed.

Christ connection ✝️
Jesus is the Word with authority—He speaks and bondage breaks.

Mark 5:9 Meaning ❓🕯️
Jesus asked, “What is your name?” The reply was, “My name is Legion, because there are many of us.”

“Legion” signals overwhelming oppression. 🌫️
Yet even here, Jesus is not intimidated. He does not ask because He lacks knowledge. He is exposing the reality so the deliverance is unmistakable.

This also shows a discipleship anchor: naming the darkness does not empower the darkness—Jesus’ lordship does.

Discipleship truth 🕯️
Do not be afraid of how deep the bondage looks. Jesus is not overwhelmed by “many.”

Christ connection ✝️
Jesus confronts the full reality of evil and still stands as Lord.

Mark 5:10 Meaning 🙏🌫️
The spirits begged Jesus again and again not to send them out of that region.

Begging repeats. 🌫️
This is not a power struggle between equals. This is submission under authority.

The repetition reveals their fear of being displaced. Darkness clings to territory. But Jesus is teaching everyone watching: the territory belongs to God, not to evil.

Discipleship truth 🕯️
When Jesus confronts darkness, darkness does not negotiate from strength. It pleads from weakness.

Christ connection ✝️
Jesus is the rightful King over every region, every life, every heart.

Mark 5:11 Meaning 🐖🌫️
A large herd of pigs was feeding on the hillside nearby.

Mark includes pigs to show the Gentile setting and to set up what happens next. 🐖
This scene is unusual, and it highlights the contrast: human lives are being treated as disposable, but economic assets are being guarded.

Discipleship truth 🕯️
Be careful what you value most. People matter more than profit.

Christ connection ✝️
Jesus’ deliverance reveals what the kingdom values: a person is worth more than a herd.

Mark 5:12 Meaning 🌫️➡️🐖
The spirits begged Jesus, “Send us to the pigs! Let us go into them.”

Again, begging. Again, dependence. 🌫️
They cannot move freely. They are asking permission, which exposes Jesus’ authority.

Discipleship truth 🕯️
Spiritual darkness is real, but it is not sovereign. Jesus is.

Christ connection ✝️
Jesus rules even over what evil is allowed to do.

Mark 5:13 Meaning 🛑🐖🌊
Jesus let them, and the spirits came out and went into the pigs. The herd rushed down the steep bank into the lake and drowned.

This is dramatic, and it is meant to show something unmistakable: whatever was in the man was destructive. 🌫️
The rush toward drowning reveals the nature of darkness—its end is death.

The lake that Jesus calmed becomes the place where the pigs drown. The same King rules both scenes.

Discipleship truth 🕯️
Do not romanticize sin or darkness. Its trajectory is always destruction.

Christ connection ✝️
Jesus demonstrates authority and exposes evil’s nature, setting the stage for visible freedom.

Mark 5:14 Meaning 🏃‍♂️🏙️
Those tending the pigs ran off and reported it in the town and countryside, and people went out to see what happened.

News spreads fast. 🕯️
Deliverance is public, and it forces a decision: what will people do with the authority of Jesus?

Discipleship truth 🕯️
When Jesus works openly, you cannot stay neutral. You either worship, resist, or retreat.

Christ connection ✝️
Jesus’ kingdom confronts communities, not just individuals.

Mark 5:15 Meaning 😨➡️🕯️
They came to Jesus and saw the man sitting there, dressed and in his right mind, and they were afraid.

This is one of the most beautiful transformations in Mark. 🕯️
The man who screamed night and day is now sitting.
The man who cut himself is now clothed.
The man who was out of his mind is now restored.

Yet the crowd is afraid—not of the demoniac anymore, but of Jesus’ power. 🌫️
Deliverance can terrify people when it threatens their sense of control.

Discipleship truth 🕯️
Some people prefer familiar bondage over unfamiliar holiness. Don’t let fear make you reject what can heal you.

Christ connection ✝️
Jesus restores identity and sanity—He returns dignity to those darkness stripped.

Mark 5:16 Meaning 🗣️🕯️
Those who had seen it told the others what happened to the man and to the pigs.

Witness spreads. 🕯️
The testimony includes both mercy and cost.

This becomes a test for the community: will they rejoice over a restored man, or grieve over lost pigs more than a saved life?

Discipleship truth 🕯️
Celebrate what Jesus celebrates. A redeemed person is a miracle worth more than material loss.

Christ connection ✝️
Jesus’ salvation is visible, and true witness tells the truth even when it’s costly.

Mark 5:17 Meaning 🌫️🚪
Then the people began begging Jesus to leave their area.

This is one of the saddest lines in the Gospel. 🌫️
They beg Jesus to go.

Why? Because His presence disrupted their normal. His authority threatened their comfort. His deliverance cost them something. And they chose distance instead of discipleship.

Discipleship truth 🕯️
It is possible to witness Jesus’ power and still reject His presence because you love comfort more than Christ.

Christ connection ✝️
Jesus is the Savior who is rejected, yet He still leaves mercy behind.

Mark 5:18 Meaning 🕯️🙏
As Jesus was getting into the boat, the man who had been freed begged to go with Him.

Now another begging enters the story—but it is the begging of love. 🕯️
This man wants nearness. He wants discipleship. He wants to stay with Jesus.

This is what grace produces: a desire to be with the Deliverer, not merely to be free from pain.

Discipleship truth 🕯️
Deliverance is meant to lead to devotion. Freedom is not the end; Jesus is.

Christ connection ✝️
Jesus creates true disciples—people who long to be near Him.

Mark 5:19 Meaning 🏠🕯️
Jesus did not let him, but said, “Go home to your own people and tell them what the Lord has done for you and how He has shown mercy.”

Jesus redirects him into mission. 🕯️
Not everyone’s calling is to physically travel with Jesus. Some are called to go home and become a living testimony.

“Tell them what the Lord has done” is powerful because Jesus links His work with the Lord’s mercy. The man is being sent to proclaim divine compassion.

Discipleship truth 🕯️
Sometimes the most obedient discipleship is returning to your real life with a transformed story and a faithful witness.

Christ connection ✝️
Jesus saves people and then sends them, turning former captives into messengers of mercy.

Mark 5:20 Meaning 🌍🕯️
So the man left and began telling in the Ten Cities what Jesus had done for him, and everyone was amazed.

He obeys, and the testimony spreads wide. 🕯️
The Ten Cities (Decapolis) suggests a larger Gentile region—meaning Jesus’ mercy is already moving outward.

This is evangelism born from transformation. Not polished performance—changed life.

Discipleship truth 🕯️
Your story of mercy is a kingdom tool. Tell what Jesus has done, plainly and faithfully.

Christ connection ✝️
Jesus’ salvation reaches the nations, and testimony prepares hearts for further gospel growth.

Mark 5:21 Meaning 🌊🕯️
Jesus crossed back to the other side of the lake. A large crowd gathered around Him as He was by the lake.

Jesus moves again. 🕯️
The same lake becomes a highway for mercy.

Crowds gather quickly, but Mark keeps reminding you: crowds are not always disciples. Yet Jesus still serves them.

Discipleship truth 🕯️
Jesus is not limited by constant need, but you must learn whether you are following Him or just surrounding Him.

Christ connection ✝️
Jesus keeps returning to people who need Him—He is steady in compassion.

Mark 5:22 Meaning 🏛️🕯️
A synagogue leader named Jairus came. When he saw Jesus, he fell at His feet.

A synagogue leader kneels. 🕯️
This is important. A man with status chooses humility, because desperation has a way of stripping pride.

Jairus’ posture is worshipful pleading. He is not debating Jesus. He is clinging to Jesus.

Discipleship truth 🕯️
When life collapses, pride collapses too—if you let it. Fall at Jesus’ feet quickly.

Christ connection ✝️
Jesus receives the desperate and the honored alike, because all need grace.

Mark 5:23 Meaning 😭🕯️
Jairus begged Jesus repeatedly, saying his little daughter was close to death and pleading for Jesus to come and heal her.

The begging is repeated again, but now it is a father begging for his child. 😭
Mark is layering urgency: this is not theoretical faith—it is crisis faith.

This is also the gospel picture of intercession. Jairus stands in the gap, pleading for life.

Discipleship truth 🕯️
Bring your deepest fear to Jesus. Faith does not hide urgency; faith carries urgency to the King.

Christ connection ✝️
Jesus is the giver of life, and He welcomes desperate requests.

Mark 5:24 Meaning 🚶‍♂️🕯️
Jesus went with him, and a large crowd followed and pressed in around Him.

Two things happen at once:

  • Jesus responds to urgent need 🕯️
  • crowds press so tightly that the path becomes difficult 🌫️

This shows discipleship realism: Jesus may say yes, but the journey to the yes can still feel crowded, delayed, and pressured.

Discipleship truth 🕯️
Do not assume delays mean denial. Stay close to Jesus even when the path feels congested.

Christ connection ✝️
Jesus walks toward suffering with purpose. He does not turn away.

Mark 5:25 Meaning 🩸🕯️
In the crowd there was a woman who had been bleeding for twelve years.

Mark introduces another suffering soul right in the middle of Jairus’ emergency. 🕯️
Twelve years is a long time. This is not a short trial—it is chronic pain, repeated disappointment, and likely social isolation.

And she is “in the crowd,” which means she is near Jesus. The next verses will show her faith reaching out. But even here, the setup matters:

Jesus is not only a Savior for public leaders with public requests. He is also a Savior for hidden sufferers with long, quiet wounds.

Discipleship truth 🕯️
Jesus sees both the urgent crisis and the long-standing pain. Neither is invisible to Him.

Christ connection ✝️
Jesus will soon reveal that His power is not limited, and His mercy is not reserved for the prominent.

A Deliverance-and-Belonging Table 🕯️

What Jesus Breaks 🕯️What It Looks Like 🌫️What Jesus Restores 🕯️
Spiritual bondageTombs, chains, torment, self-destructionPeace, dignity, right mind
Social exileIsolation, fear, rejectionBelonging, clothing, community
Fear of loss and deathPanic, begging, urgencyHope, direction, life-giving mercy

A Two-Beggings Contrast 🕯️

Who Is BeggingWhy They BegWhat It Reveals
Demons 🌫️Fear of Jesus’ authorityDarkness is not sovereign
People in need 🕯️Desire for mercy and lifeFaith runs to the Savior
Crowd begging Jesus to leave 🌫️Comfort threatened by powerPreference for control over Christ
Delivered man begging to follow 🕯️Love after mercyGrace produces devotion

A Closing Discipleship Mirror 🕯️

  • Do I run to Jesus with my wounds, or do I live among “tombs” of isolation because I believe I’m too far gone? 🏚️🕯️
  • Do I value what Jesus values—people restored—or do I quietly value comfort, reputation, or profit more than mercy? 🌫️
  • When Jesus disrupts my normal, do I beg Him to leave, or do I bow and let Him reign? 👑🕯️
  • After Jesus helps me, do I want Jesus Himself, or only the relief? 🕯️
  • Am I willing to go back to my people and tell what the Lord has done, even if my story makes people stare? 🗣️🕯️
  • When my life feels urgent like Jairus, can I trust Jesus to walk with me even through delays and crowd pressure? 🚶‍♂️🕯️

Mark 5:1–25 shows you a Savior who crosses storms to reach the tormented, speaks one command and breaks chains, restores dignity to the ruined, and then sends the delivered home as a messenger of mercy. It also shows you that Jesus can be rejected by a town that loves comfort, yet welcomed by a father who loves his child more than his pride. And just as Jairus is walking with Jesus in urgent need, Mark introduces a woman who has suffered for twelve years—proving that Jesus is never overwhelmed by the crowd, never limited by complexity, and never unable to care for more than one hurting soul at a time. The King who binds the strong man is the same King who walks toward death to bring life. Jesus Christ is our righteousness. ✝️🕯️
Jesus Christ is our righteousness. ✝️🕯️
