A Study in Matthew 28:1–25

Matthew 28 is the sunrise chapter. šŸŒ…šŸ•Æļø
After betrayal, trial, crucifixion, and burial, God answers the darkness with an empty tomb and a living Christ. āœļøšŸ•Æļø
This chapter does not present resurrection as a myth or a metaphor. It presents it as the turning point of history and the foundation of discipleship.

In Matthew 28, we see:

  • God shaking the earth again, not in judgment, but in victory šŸŒšŸŒ…
  • fear turning into worship šŸ•Æļø
  • lies trying to bury truth even after the tomb is empty šŸŒ«ļø
  • and Jesus giving His final command: go, make disciples, teach, and trust His presence always āœļøšŸ•Æļø

This chapter shows a discipleship truth that changes everything:

Christian faith is not ā€œtry harder.ā€
Christian faith is ā€œJesus is risen—so obey Him, worship Him, and walk with Him.ā€ šŸ•Æļø
Jesus Christ is our righteousness. āœļøšŸ•Æļø

Matthew 28:1 Meaning šŸŒ…šŸ•Æļø
After the Sabbath, at dawn on the first day of the week, Mary Magdalene and the other Mary went to look at the tomb.

Matthew begins with faithfulness in grief. šŸ•Æļø
They go while it is still early, while hope still feels distant.

This is a gentle discipleship picture: sometimes devotion shows up simply by going back to Jesus even when your heart is heavy.

Discipleship truth šŸ•Æļø
When you don’t know what to do, go to Jesus. Even sorrow can become a pathway to revelation.

Christ connection āœļø
Jesus is about to meet grieving disciples with resurrection joy.

Matthew 28:2 Meaning šŸŒāš”
There was a violent earthquake, for an angel of the Lord came down from heaven, went to the tomb, rolled back the stone, and sat on it.

The stone is rolled away, not to let Jesus out, but to let witnesses in. šŸ•Æļø
Jesus is not trapped by rocks.

The angel sits on the stone like a throne. šŸ‘‘šŸ•Æļø
That posture preaches: heaven has authority here. Death has been overruled.

Discipleship truth šŸ•Æļø
God can move what humans seal. Nothing can lock God out of His promises.

Christ connection āœļø
Jesus is Lord over death, and His resurrection is not ā€œhelpedā€ by humans—it is declared by God.

Matthew 28:3 Meaning āœØšŸ•Æļø
The angel’s appearance was like lightning, and his clothing was white as snow.

Lightning implies purity and power. ✨
White implies holiness and victory.

Heaven’s messenger looks like heaven’s message: the resurrection is not a quiet rumor. It is holy power.

Discipleship truth šŸ•Æļø
God’s victory is not timid. When God acts, the world shakes and heaven shines.

Christ connection āœļø
Jesus is the holy Victor. His resurrection carries the purity of God’s triumph.

Matthew 28:4 Meaning šŸŒ«ļøšŸ˜Ø
The guards were so afraid that they shook and became like dead men.

The irony is strong: the guards assigned to prevent ā€œtricksā€ collapse like corpses. šŸŒ«ļø
The ones posted to stop resurrection become witnesses that something supernatural happened.

Discipleship truth šŸ•Æļø
Human strength cannot stand when God reveals His power. Don’t trust in earthly security.

Christ connection āœļø
Jesus’ resurrection renders human resistance powerless.

Matthew 28:5 Meaning šŸ•Æļø
The angel told the women not to be afraid because he knew they were looking for Jesus who was crucified.

He addresses their fear with tenderness. šŸ•Æļø
He does not shame them for trembling; he guides them through it.

Notice: Jesus ā€œwho was crucified.ā€ The resurrection does not erase the cross; it confirms it. The risen Jesus is the crucified Jesus.

Discipleship truth šŸ•Æļø
God meets fear with truth. Don’t let fear define your reality when God has spoken.

Christ connection āœļø
The same Jesus who died is the one who lives. Salvation is finished and verified.

Matthew 28:6 Meaning āš°ļøāž”ļøšŸŒ…
ā€œHe is not here. He has risen, just as He said. Come and see the place where He lay.ā€

This is the center announcement. šŸŒ…
Resurrection is not ā€œwishful.ā€ It is ā€œjust as He said.ā€

The invitation ā€œcome and seeā€ shows faith is grounded in reality. Christianity is not hiding evidence. It is presenting it.

Discipleship truth šŸ•Æļø
Let your faith be anchored in Jesus’ words. He keeps what He promises.

Christ connection āœļø
Jesus rises in victory, proving His identity and securing eternal life for believers.

Matthew 28:7 Meaning šŸƒā€ā™€ļøāž”ļøšŸ•Æļø
Go quickly and tell His disciples He has risen and is going ahead of them into Galilee; there they will see Him.

The first commission in Matthew is given to grieving women. šŸ•Æļø
God entrusts resurrection news to those the culture might overlook.

Also, Jesus ā€œgoes ahead.ā€ This is shepherd language: the Shepherd leads His sheep even after death.

Discipleship truth šŸ•Æļø
If you have seen what God has done, you are sent. Witness is part of discipleship.

Christ connection āœļø
Jesus is the Shepherd who goes before His people, guiding them into restored fellowship.

Matthew 28:8 Meaning šŸ˜Øāž”ļøšŸ˜„
They left the tomb quickly with fear and great joy, running to tell the disciples.

Fear and joy mix together. šŸ˜ØšŸ˜„
That is often what happens when God’s power breaks into your world: it is thrilling and overwhelming.

Their response is not debate. It is obedience. They run.

Discipleship truth šŸ•Æļø
When God gives you good news, don’t sit on it. Move. Obey. Speak.

Christ connection āœļø
The risen Christ turns grief into joy and turns worship into mission.

Matthew 28:9 Meaning šŸ‘‘šŸ•Æļø
Jesus met them and greeted them. They came to Him, took hold of His feet, and worshiped Him.

Jesus meets them on the path of obedience. šŸ•Æļø
They are running to tell, and He shows up.

They hold His feet: this confirms bodily resurrection. He is not an idea. He is alive.

And they worship Him. šŸ‘‘
The proper response to resurrection is worship.

Discipleship truth šŸ•Æļø
Jesus meets obedient disciples. Worship is the right landing place for every encounter with Him.

Christ connection āœļø
Jesus receives worship because He is truly Lord and risen King.

Matthew 28:10 Meaning šŸ•Æļøāž”ļø
Jesus told them not to be afraid. He told them to tell His brothers to go to Galilee where they will see Him.

Jesus calls the disciples ā€œbrothers.ā€ šŸ•Æļø
Remember: they fled. They failed. Yet Jesus names them family.

This is resurrection grace: He restores relationship, not just reputation.

Discipleship truth šŸ•Æļø
Your failures don’t cancel your place in Christ when you belong to Him. He restores and calls you forward.

Christ connection āœļø
Jesus’ resurrection secures adoption. He is not ashamed to call believers family.

Matthew 28:11 Meaning šŸŒ«ļø
While the women were on their way, some guards went into the city and reported everything that happened.

Truth starts spreading. šŸŒ«ļø
Even the guards testify. They cannot deny what they saw.

This is significant: enemies become unwilling messengers of resurrection reality.

Discipleship truth šŸ•Æļø
God can use even hostile witnesses to confirm truth. You don’t have to fear opposition.

Christ connection āœļø
The resurrection is public enough that even guards must report it.

Matthew 28:12 Meaning šŸŒ«ļøāš ļø
The chief priests met with the leaders and made a plan.

Same pattern as before. šŸŒ«ļø
When truth rises, plotting rises.

Some people respond to evidence with repentance. Others respond with strategy.

Discipleship truth šŸ•Æļø
When pride rules, evidence doesn’t soften—it hardens. Humility is required for faith.

Christ connection āœļø
Jesus’ victory exposes hearts. The resurrection reveals who loves truth.

Matthew 28:13 Meaning āš ļøšŸŒ«ļø
They told the guards to say the disciples stole the body while they slept.

This is an absurd lie, because sleeping guards cannot testify about what happened. āš ļø
But lies don’t need coherence. They need repetition.

This shows a discipleship reality: even when God gives clear evidence, sin will still invent narratives to protect itself.

Discipleship truth šŸ•Æļø
Don’t be shocked by organized lies. Anchor your mind in Christ and Scripture.

Christ connection āœļø
The resurrection is so undeniable that opponents must manufacture a story instead of disproving it.

Matthew 28:14 Meaning šŸ›”ļø
They promised to satisfy the governor if the report caused trouble and to keep the guards out of danger.

Money and protection are offered to preserve a lie. šŸ›”ļø
That reveals what’s driving them: not truth, but control.

Discipleship truth šŸ•Æļø
Lies usually come with incentives. Truth often comes with a cross. Choose truth anyway.

Christ connection āœļø
Jesus offers truth that costs Him His life, not lies that protect human power.

Matthew 28:15 Meaning šŸŒ«ļø
The guards took the money and did as instructed, and the story spread among the Jews to this day.

Lies spread quickly because they are easier than repentance. šŸŒ«ļø
But notice: Matthew tells you it is a ā€œstory.ā€ He is confident truth will endure.

Discipleship truth šŸ•Æļø
Don’t measure truth by popularity. Truth is true even when lies are loud.

Christ connection āœļø
The risen Jesus is reality. Every lie will eventually collapse under His lordship.

Matthew 28:16 Meaning šŸ”ļøšŸ•Æļø
The eleven disciples went to Galilee, to the mountain where Jesus told them to go.

Obedience gathers them. šŸ•Æļø
They are no longer scattered. Resurrection begins the re-forming of the community.

The mountain location reminds us: God often meets His people in places of revelation and commissioning.

Discipleship truth šŸ•Æļø
God restores you by calling you forward in obedience, not by letting you remain in shame.

Christ connection āœļø
Jesus gathers broken disciples into mission.

Matthew 28:17 Meaning šŸ•ÆļøšŸŒ«ļø
When they saw Him, they worshiped Him, but some doubted.

Matthew includes the honest detail: some doubted. šŸŒ«ļø
This does not mean they were fake disciples. It means they were overwhelmed humans.

Resurrection is so big that the mind trembles. Yet they still worship.

Discipleship truth šŸ•Æļø
Bring your doubts to Jesus, not away from Jesus. Worship can coexist with trembling questions.

Christ connection āœļø
Jesus receives worship and still draws near to imperfect faith.

Matthew 28:18 Meaning šŸ‘‘šŸ•Æļø
Jesus came to them and said all authority in heaven and on earth has been given to Him.

This is the authority statement. šŸ‘‘
The One mocked with a reed now speaks with cosmic authority.

Authority over heaven and earth means:

  • salvation authority
  • mission authority
  • judgment authority
  • kingship authority

Discipleship truth šŸ•Æļø
If Jesus has all authority, then obedience is not optional. It is the safest response.

Christ connection āœļø
Jesus is the risen King. His lordship is total.

Matthew 28:19 Meaning šŸŒšŸ•Æļø
Therefore, go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.

This is the Great Commission. šŸŒ
Disciples are not made only by gathering in one place. They are made by going outward.

All nations means every ethnicity, every culture, every language. The kingdom is global.

Baptizing in the name (singular) of Father, Son, Spirit shows the unity of God’s saving work.

Discipleship truth šŸ•Æļø
Your faith is meant to multiply. The risen Jesus sends believers outward with courage.

Christ connection āœļø
Jesus is Savior for the nations, not only one people group.

Matthew 28:20 Meaning šŸ•Æļøāœļø
Teach them to obey everything I commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.

Discipleship is not only conversion. It is obedience training. šŸ•Æļø
Jesus calls people to a life shaped by His words.

Then He gives the promise that holds the mission together: ā€œI am with you always.ā€ āœļø
Not sometimes. Not only in success. Always.

This promise is not sentimental. It is power. The presence of Jesus makes obedience possible.

Discipleship truth šŸ•Æļø
You do not make disciples alone. The risen Christ is present in your obedience, your weakness, and your mission.

Christ connection āœļø
Jesus is Emmanuel forever—God with us until the end.

A Resurrection-and-Response Table šŸ•Æļø

A Closing Discipleship Mirror šŸ•Æļø

  • Do I seek Jesus early like the women, even when my heart is heavy, or do I wait until life feels easier? šŸŒ…
  • Do I believe God can move ā€œsealed stonesā€ in my life—things I thought were final? šŸŖØāž”ļøšŸ•Æļø
  • When I receive good news from God, do I obey quickly, or do I delay? šŸƒā€ā™€ļø
  • Do I let organized lies confuse me, or do I anchor my mind in Scripture and the risen Christ? šŸŒ«ļøāž”ļøšŸ•Æļø
  • When I worship, do I also accept the call to obey and make disciples, or do I want worship without mission? šŸ•ÆļøšŸŒ
  • Do I live like Jesus truly has all authority, or do I treat His commands like suggestions? šŸ‘‘
  • Do I draw strength from His promise, ā€œI am with you always,ā€ especially when obedience is costly? āœļøšŸ•Æļø

Matthew 28 is the chapter where grief turns to worship and fear turns to mission. The tomb is empty, the stone is rolled away, and heaven sits on what humans used as a seal. Guards fall like dead men while Jesus stands alive. Women become the first witnesses, running with trembling joy. Religious leaders spread lies because truth is too strong to ignore. Disciples worship with imperfect faith, and Jesus answers not with rejection but with authority and presence: all authority is His, so disciples must be made in every nation, with baptism and obedience, and with the promise that holds every faithful step togetherā€”ā€œI am with you always.ā€ The resurrection is not only the ending of Matthew. It is the beginning of the church’s life, courage, and mission, because Jesus Christ is our righteousness. āœļøšŸ•Æļø
Jesus Christ is our righteousness. āœļøšŸ•Æļø
