A Study in Numbers 29:1–40

Numbers 29 continues the worship calendar from Numbers 28, focusing on the seventh month—Israel’s most intense season of sacred gatherings.

If Numbers 28 teaches daily, weekly, monthly, and spring feasts, Numbers 29 teaches the autumn holy days that culminate in the Feast of Tabernacles.

This chapter is not God “adding busywork.” It is God shaping Israel’s inner life.

As the people stand ready to enter the land, God trains them to remember three realities:

  • God is King and calls His people to wake up and listen.
  • Sin is serious, and atonement is precious.
  • Life in the land is still temporary; Israel must live as pilgrims under God’s shelter.

Numbers 29 is about worship that humbles, cleanses, and re-centers the heart.

Numbers 29:1–6 Meaning

On the first day of the seventh month, Israel is to hold a sacred assembly, do no regular work, and observe a day for blowing trumpets. They offer burnt offerings: one young bull, one ram, and seven male lambs a year old without defect, along with grain offerings, and one male goat for a sin offering. These are in addition to the regular monthly offering and daily offerings.

This is the Feast of Trumpets.

The trumpet blast is a spiritual alarm clock.

It calls the people to attention: God is speaking; the season is holy; prepare your heart.

A sacred assembly means worship is communal, not only private.

The offerings include a sin offering because awakening is not only celebration; it is repentance and cleansing. When God calls attention, the right response is humility.

This day begins a month that will include the Day of Atonement and the Feast of Tabernacles. The trumpet blast is like a doorway into a deeper season with God.

A table helps show what trumpets communicate.

Numbers 29:7–11 Meaning

On the tenth day of the seventh month, Israel holds a sacred assembly and must deny themselves (afflict themselves). They do no work and present burnt offerings and a sin offering, in addition to the sin offering for atonement and the regular daily offerings.

This is the Day of Atonement.

The command to “deny yourselves” shows that this day is marked by humility, fasting, and repentance.

This is not a day for celebration. It is a day for cleansing.

The offerings emphasize atonement.

Israel is being taught: you cannot live in God’s land, enjoy God’s blessings, and ignore sin. Sin must be faced.

The Day of Atonement becomes the central annual reminder that Israel needs mercy and cleansing.

Numbers 29:12–16 Meaning

On the fifteenth day of the seventh month, Israel holds a sacred assembly and does no regular work, celebrating a feast to the LORD for seven days. The first day’s offerings include thirteen young bulls, two rams, fourteen male lambs a year old, plus grain and drink offerings, and one male goat for a sin offering, in addition to regular offerings.

This begins the Feast of Tabernacles.

The scale is massive.

Thirteen bulls on day one alone shows the weight of thanksgiving.

This feast is joyful, but the sin offering remains. Even in joy, Israel remembers they live by mercy.

Tabernacles is a feast of dwelling—remembering the wilderness period when Israel lived in tents and God sheltered them.

As Israel enters the land, God commands a feast that reminds them: you are still pilgrims. You still depend on God’s shelter.

Numbers 29:17–34 Meaning

For each of the seven days of Tabernacles, Israel offers burnt offerings with a decreasing number of bulls each day: twelve on the second day, eleven on the third, and so on, down to seven bulls on the seventh day, with two rams and fourteen lambs each day, and a goat for a sin offering, plus daily and regular offerings.

The descending pattern is intentional.

It creates a structured rhythm across the week, showing that worship is ordered and thoughtful, not chaotic.

It also teaches perseverance: worship is not only a single great moment; it is sustained across days.

There is also a spiritual symbol in the decreasing bulls: the feast moves steadily toward completion, like a journey concluding in rest.

Israel’s worship is meant to feel like walking with God through a season—day after day, trusting, thanking, remembering.

Numbers 29:35–38 Meaning

On the eighth day, Israel holds a closing sacred assembly and does no regular work. They offer one bull, one ram, seven lambs, with grain and drink offerings, and one male goat for a sin offering, in addition to regular offerings.

This eighth day is a solemn closing assembly.

After seven days of feasting, God gives a final day of gathering and worship.

The offerings are smaller, but not casual. The reduction does not mean less devotion; it means the season is being brought to a holy conclusion.

This is a powerful spiritual lesson: ending well matters.

Numbers 29:39–40 Meaning

Moses tells the Israelites that they must present these offerings to the LORD at their appointed feasts—besides their vows, freewill offerings, burnt offerings, grain offerings, drink offerings, and fellowship offerings.

The chapter closes by clarifying: these are the required offerings for the feasts, but they do not cancel personal worship.

Public worship rhythms and personal devotion belong together.

God sets communal patterns, and God welcomes voluntary offerings of love.

Christ in Numbers 29
Numbers 29 points to Jesus through trumpets, atonement, and dwelling.

Jesus is the One who awakens the people of God
The trumpet feast calls Israel to attention. In Christ, God calls sinners to wake up, repent, and return. The gospel is God’s trumpet blast to the world.

Jesus fulfills the Day of Atonement
The Day of Atonement taught Israel that sin requires cleansing and mercy. Jesus fulfills this by offering Himself once for all, securing eternal redemption.

Jesus is the true Tabernacle
Tabernacles celebrates God dwelling with His people and sheltering them. Jesus is God with us, the living presence of God among His people. He is the shelter, the dwelling, the place of safety.

Jesus will complete the pilgrimage
Tabernacles reminds Israel they are pilgrims. In Christ, believers live as pilgrims on earth, awaiting the final home. The final dwelling of God with His people is pictured in Revelation’s new creation hope.

Living Numbers 29 Today
Numbers 29 shapes discipleship with three heart movements: awakening, cleansing, and grateful pilgrimage.

Let God wake you up
Spiritual drift is real. The trumpet feast calls disciples to attentiveness—listening to Scripture, responding to conviction, and re-centering life around God’s voice.

Practice repentance as worship
The Day of Atonement teaches humility. While Christ has finished atonement, disciples still practice confession and repentance as a way of living clean before God.

Celebrate with humility
Tabernacles is joyful, yet sin offerings remain. Joy and humility belong together. The Christian life is a feast, but it is a feast under mercy.

Remember you are a pilgrim
Tabernacles reminds the believer: you are not home yet. Do not build your identity on earthly comfort. God is your shelter, and heaven is your home.

End seasons well
The eighth-day assembly shows the value of finishing with worship. Disciples can end weeks, projects, and seasons with gratitude and surrender.

A contrast table helps keep the chapter practical.

Numbers 29 teaches that worship is not only daily routine—it is also sacred seasons that recalibrate the heart.

Trumpets wake the soul.
Atonement cleanses the conscience.
Tabernacles teaches grateful pilgrimage under God’s shelter.

And in Jesus Christ, these feasts find their fulfillment: He awakens, He atones, and He dwells with His people—until the day we dwell with Him forever.
