Jesus in Galatians: The Savior Who Sets Us Free

A Bible Study Based on the CEV Translation

Freedom Through Jesus Christ

The book of Galatians passionately defends the truth of the Gospel: salvation comes by grace through faith in Jesus Christ, not by following the law. Paul writes to the churches in Galatia who were being misled into believing they had to follow Jewish laws to be accepted by God. His urgent plea reminds believers that Jesus alone is enough.

This blog post explores key themes of Jesus’ role in salvation, identity, and freedom—drawing on the Contemporary English Version (CEV) translation to highlight how Jesus fulfills the law and offers new life.

1. Jesus Gave His Life for Our Freedom

“Christ obeyed God our Father and gave himself as a sacrifice for our sins to rescue us from this evil world.”
— Galatians 1:4 (CEV)

From the very beginning, Paul centers the Gospel around Jesus’ sacrificial death. His rescue mission wasn’t partial—it was complete. Through Jesus, believers are freed from the power of sin and darkness.

2. Justified by Faith in Jesus, Not the Law

“We know that God accepts only those who have faith in Jesus Christ.”
— Galatians 2:16 (CEV)

Paul refutes the idea that keeping the law makes anyone right with God. Instead, it’s only through faith in Jesus that we are justified. Jesus fulfilled the law completely—so we don’t have to earn our righteousness.

3. Christ Lives in Me

“Christ now lives in me. I still live my life in a human body, but I live by faith in the Son of God. He loved me and gave his life for me.”
— Galatians 2:20 (CEV)

This powerful verse captures the intimate, transformational relationship believers have with Jesus. He doesn’t just save us—He dwells within us, shaping how we live each day.

4. Adopted as God’s Children Through Christ

“But when the time was right, God sent his Son… so he could adopt us as his very own children.”
— Galatians 4:4-5 (CEV)

Jesus didn’t just redeem us—He brought us into God’s family. Through Him, we’re no longer spiritual orphans, but beloved sons and daughters with full access to the Father.

5. Freedom, Not Slavery

“Christ has set us free! This means we are really free. Now hold on to your freedom and don’t ever become slaves of the Law again.”
— Galatians 5:1 (CEV)

One of the most central messages of Galatians is freedom. Jesus didn’t die so that we would return to the slavery of legalism. We are free to live by the Spirit and love one another.

6. Living by the Spirit Through Jesus

“God’s Spirit has given us life, and so we should follow the Spirit.”
— Galatians 5:25 (CEV)

Jesus gives us the Holy Spirit to guide and empower us in our new life. The fruit of the Spirit—love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control—is the evidence of Christ living in us.

7. The Cross of Christ is Everything

“The cross of our Lord Jesus Christ is my only reason for bragging.”
— Galatians 6:14 (CEV)

Paul finishes his letter by reminding us that the cross is everything. We don’t boast in our works or achievements—only in Jesus’ finished work.

Conclusion: Jesus Is Our Freedom and Identity

Galatians is a powerful declaration that Jesus is enough. He saves, transforms, adopts, and sets us free. Through Him, we live by faith, not fear. We serve out of love, not obligation. Jesus is not just the Savior—He is our life, our freedom, and our identity.
