Jesus in Colossians: The Supremacy and Sufficiency of Christ

A Bible Study Based on the CEV Translation

Christ Is All You Need

The book of Colossians is a deeply Christ-centered letter that reveals the supremacy and sufficiency of Jesus in all things. Written by the Apostle Paul, this letter confronts false teachings that tried to add rules, rituals, or mystical experiences to the Gospel. Paul’s message is clear: Jesus is enough—He is Lord over all creation and the head of the Church.

In this study based on the Contemporary English Version (CEV), we will explore how Colossians reveals Jesus as the image of God, the Creator, the Reconciler, and the One in whom all wisdom and knowledge dwell. Every believer is complete in Him.

1. Jesus: The Source of Grace and Peace

“I pray that God our Father will be kind to you and will bless you with peace!”
Colossians 1:2 (CEV)

Jesus is the reason believers receive grace and peace from God. Our relationship with Him brings spiritual rest, wholeness, and assurance.

2. Jesus: The Hope of the Gospel

“The good news is spreading all over the world with great success. It has spread in the same way among you ever since the day you first heard about God’s wonderful kindness and truly understood what it means.”
Colossians 1:6 (CEV)

The message of salvation through Jesus Christ continues to bear fruit around the world. The Gospel is alive because Jesus is alive.

3. Jesus: The Believer’s Strength and Endurance

“His glorious power will make you patient and strong enough to endure anything, and you will be truly happy.”
Colossians 1:11 (CEV)

Endurance in faith comes not from human willpower but from the strength Christ gives. His power makes joy possible even in hardship.

4. Jesus: The Savior Who Rescues and Redeems

“God rescued us from the dark power of Satan and brought us into the kingdom of his dear Son, who forgives our sins and sets us free.”
Colossians 1:13-14 (CEV)

Jesus rescues us from darkness, transfers us into His kingdom, and sets us free from sin. Salvation is a transfer of allegiance—from darkness to the Savior.

5. Jesus: The Visible Image of the Invisible God

“Christ is exactly like God, who cannot be seen. He is the first-born Son, superior to all creation.”
Colossians 1:15 (CEV)

Jesus perfectly reveals the unseen God. To know what God is like, look at Jesus. He is not a created being—He is the Creator.

6. Jesus: Creator and Sustainer of All Things

“Everything was created by him, everything in heaven and on earth, everything seen and unseen… God’s Son was before all else, and by him everything is held together.”
Colossians 1:16-17 (CEV)

Jesus created the universe and holds it all together. His power sustains creation, and His presence holds our lives in balance.

7. Jesus: Head of the Church

“He is the head of his body, which is the church.”
Colossians 1:18 (CEV)

The Church does not revolve around leaders, traditions, or buildings—it revolves around Jesus. He leads, nurtures, and gives life to His body.

8. Jesus: The Fullness of God in Human Form

“God was pleased for him to make peace by sacrificing his blood on the cross, so that all beings in heaven and on earth would be brought back to God.”
Colossians 1:20 (CEV)

Through Jesus’ blood, reconciliation was made possible. He restores the broken relationship between humanity and God through His cross.

9. Jesus: The Mystery Revealed

“God did this because he wanted you Gentiles to understand his wonderful and glorious mystery. And the mystery is that Christ lives in you, and he is your hope of sharing in God’s glory.”
Colossians 1:27 (CEV)

The greatest mystery ever revealed is this: Christ lives in His people. This is the hope and foundation of the Christian life.

10. Jesus: All the Wisdom and Knowledge of God

“In him are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge.”
Colossians 2:3 (CEV)

All spiritual truth is found in Christ. We do not need secret codes, extra rituals, or legalistic traditions—Jesus is the source of all divine wisdom.

11. Jesus: The Fulfillment of the Law

“Christ has taken away the written law with its rules and nailed it to the cross.”
Colossians 2:14 (CEV)

Legalism is powerless to save. Jesus fulfilled the law and paid our debt, setting us free from condemnation.

12. Jesus: The Life of the Believer

“You died, which means that your life is hidden with Christ, who sits beside God.”
Colossians 3:3 (CEV)

A Christian’s identity is now rooted in Jesus. We are not defined by the world—we are defined by our union with Christ.

13. Jesus: Our Example for Godly Living

“Let Christ’s teachings live in your hearts, making you rich in the true wisdom.”
Colossians 3:16 (CEV)

Christ’s teachings guide us into love, peace, thankfulness, and service. Living like Jesus glorifies God and blesses others.

Conclusion: Christ Is Enough

Colossians reminds believers that Jesus is supreme over everything and sufficient for everything. There is no need to look elsewhere for spiritual fulfillment—Jesus is the fullness of God, and He lives in us. When we walk in Him, rooted and built up in faith, we are complete.
