The story of Joseph and his family concludes with a powerful picture of God’s providence, blessing, and the fulfillment of His promises to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. These chapters reveal how God’s plan of salvation and preservation extends beyond individual lives to entire nations.
Jacob’s Journey to Egypt (Genesis 46)
After years of famine, Jacob, also known as Israel, is encouraged by God to move his family to Egypt. God reassures Jacob in a vision:
“I am God, the God of your father,” He said. “Don’t be afraid to go to Egypt, because I will make you into a great nation there.” (Genesis 46:3, CEV)
Jacob takes his sons, their families, and all their possessions to Egypt, where they are reunited with Joseph. This move marks a crucial step in the unfolding story of God’s covenant people.
The Blessing of Jacob’s Sons (Genesis 48-49)
Before his death, Jacob blesses Joseph’s two sons, Ephraim and Manasseh, adopting them as his own, which elevates them among the tribes of Israel.
Jacob then gathers all his sons and delivers prophetic blessings over each of them. These blessings highlight their individual characteristics and the future roles their descendants will play within the nation of Israel.
Jacob’s final words emphasize God’s faithfulness and the unfolding destiny of His people.
Joseph’s Assurance and Death (Genesis 50)
After Jacob’s death, Joseph reassures his brothers, reminding them of God’s plan:
“You planned to harm me, but God planned it all for good.” (Genesis 50:20, CEV)
Joseph forgives them again and promises to care for them and their descendants. Joseph lives to see his great-grandchildren and requests that when God delivers His people from Egypt, his bones be carried back to Canaan.
