After Joseph’s family settles in Egypt, their descendants grow into a great nation. However, over time, a new Pharaoh rises who does not know Joseph and perceives the Israelites as a threat. This sets the stage for the dramatic story of deliverance through Moses.
The Oppression of the Israelites (Exodus 1)
The Israelites multiply greatly in Egypt, fulfilling God’s promise to Abraham about numerous descendants. But Pharaoh, fearing their growing numbers, enslaves them and imposes harsh labor:
“He made their lives bitter with hard labor in brick and mortar and with all kinds of work in the fields.” (Exodus 1:14, CEV)
Pharaoh also orders the killing of all Hebrew baby boys to reduce their population. Despite this, the Israelites continue to grow in number because God blesses them.
The Birth of Moses (Exodus 2)
During this dangerous time, a Levite woman named Jochebed gives birth to a son—Moses. To protect him, she places him in a basket and sets it afloat on the Nile River. Pharaoh’s daughter finds the baby and raises him as her own in the royal palace.
Moses grows up with a unique identity, connected both to the Egyptian royal family and his Hebrew roots.
Moses’ Compassion and Flight (Exodus 2:11-25)
As an adult, Moses witnesses the suffering of his people. One day, he sees an Egyptian beating a Hebrew and kills the Egyptian to defend his kin. Fearing the consequences, Moses flees to Midian, where he becomes a shepherd and starts a family.
God hears the cries of the Israelites and begins to prepare Moses for a greater mission—leading His people out of slavery.
