What Is the Cost of Discipleship ✝: Following Jesus When It Costs Everything

Every generation of believers must face the same question Jesus asked His disciples: “Will you follow Me no matter the cost?” Many want the blessings of God but avoid the sacrifice Jesus requires. Yet true discipleship is a wholehearted surrender that places Jesus above comfort, approval, security, and even personal desire.

The cost of discipleship is not a punishment. It is the doorway to real freedom, real purpose, and real life in Christ. Jesus does not call His followers to a comfortable path—He calls them to a transforming one.

The Call of Jesus Requires Total Surrender
Jesus never watered down His invitation. When crowds followed Him, He spoke plainly so people understood what it truly meant to walk in His footsteps. Luke 14:27 (CEV) records His words:

“You cannot be my disciple unless you carry your cross and follow me.”

This was not poetic language. It was a call to die—to self, to sin, to pride, and to anything ruling the heart above God. Discipleship costs us everything that competes with Christ.

  • Following Jesus will cost comfort.
  • Following Jesus will cost your old identity.
  • Following Jesus will cost your right to live life your own way.
  • Following Jesus will cost relationships that pull you away from Him.
  • Following Jesus will cost every allegiance before His.

But the cost is never greater than the reward. Jesus never asks for what He does not replace with something better—freedom instead of bondage, purpose instead of confusion, and eternal life instead of temporary pleasure.

Discipleship Means Leaving the Old Life Behind
When Jesus called His first disciples, they responded immediately. Matthew 4:20 (CEV) says:

“At once they left their nets and went with him.”

Their nets represented their entire lives—security, income, identity, routine. Following Jesus meant letting go. True discipleship always requires a “leaving” in order to embrace a “greater calling.”

Some must leave sinful habits.
Some must leave harmful relationships.
Some must leave pride, bitterness, or control.
Some must leave secret sin that slowly kills the soul.
Some must leave the desire for applause or comfort.

Every disciple must leave something behind.

If following Jesus costs you nothing, it is not discipleship. But if following Jesus costs you something, He will give you more than you could ever imagine. Jesus says in Mark 10:29–30 (CEV):

“Everyone who has given up anything… will be repaid a hundred times as much… and will have eternal life.”

Discipleship Means Loving Jesus Above All Else
Jesus spoke clearly about priorities. Luke 14:26 (CEV) says:

“You cannot be my disciple unless you love me more than you love your father and mother, your wife and children, and your brothers and sisters. You cannot come with me unless you love me more than you love your own life.”

Jesus was not calling believers to despise their families—He was calling them to put Him first. When Jesus holds the highest place in the heart, every other love becomes healthier, purer, and stronger.

To love Jesus more than anything means:

  • His Word shapes decisions.
  • His Voice overrides opinions.
  • His Will outweighs your own.
  • His Glory matters more than your comfort.

This is the foundation of true discipleship.

Discipleship Costs Pride, but Gives You Purpose
Many struggle not with external sacrifice but with internal surrender. Following Jesus means releasing:

  • the need to control outcomes
  • the desire to please people
  • the craving to be accepted by the world
  • the fear of losing respect
  • the pride of self-reliance

Jesus replaces pride with purpose, fear with faith, and insecurity with identity.

The Cost Is High Because the Calling Is Holy
Jesus does not hide the cost—but He also reveals the promise. Matthew 16:25 (CEV):

“If you try to save your life, you will lose it. But if you give it up for me, you will find it.”

We lose nothing of eternal value by following Him. We gain everything that truly matters.

– We gain peace the world cannot steal.
– We gain joy the world cannot take.
– We gain purpose the world cannot understand.
– We gain a future the world cannot offer.
– We gain eternal life the world cannot promise.

The cost is temporary. The reward is eternal.

Summary: The Cost of Discipleship According to Jesus
The cost of discipleship is not about losing your life—it’s about discovering the life you were created for. Jesus calls His followers to lay down lesser things so they may receive greater treasure.

Every believer must choose between the narrow road of discipleship and the wide road of comfort. The narrow road is costly—yet it leads to life, victory, and unshakable joy.

Two helpful tables highlight the contrast and the invitation Jesus offers:

Important CEV Scriptures for Further Study:

  • Luke 14:26–27 — Jesus defines the cost.
  • Matthew 16:24–26 — Take up your cross and follow Him.
  • Mark 10:28–31 — God rewards every sacrifice for Christ.
  • Galatians 2:20 — “I no longer live, but Christ lives in me.”
  • Philippians 3:7–8 — Everything is worthless compared to knowing Jesus.

The call of Jesus is simple yet costly: “Follow Me.”
And every disciple who says yes discovers that Jesus is worth every sacrifice.
