What Jesus Taught About the Cost of Discipleship
Jesus never hid the truth — following Him leads to life, but it also costs everything.
Not because Jesus wants to burden us, but because He invites us into a love and purpose worth more than anything we could lose.
He said plainly:
“You cannot be my disciple unless you give up everything you have.”
— Luke 14:33 (CEV)
This doesn’t mean every believer becomes poor or homeless.
It means Jesus becomes the highest love, the highest loyalty, the first priority.
Nothing—not comfort, not reputation, not relationships, not personal dreams—comes before Him.
Why?
Because only what is surrendered to Jesus can be transformed by Jesus.
1. Discipleship Requires Surrender, Not Comfort
Jesus never promised:
• ease
• applause
• popularity
• convenience
He promised:
• life
• peace
• freedom
• purpose
• eternal reward
Jesus said:
“If you want to be my disciple, you must put aside your selfish desires.”
— Matthew 16:24 (CEV)
Discipleship is not an add-on to life.
It becomes the life.
2. Discipleship Means Choosing Jesus Above Everything
Jesus said something shocking:
“You cannot be my disciple unless you love me more than you love your father and mother.”
— Luke 14:26 (CEV)
He was not commanding hatred.
He was teaching priority.
Your love for Jesus must be so great that every other love looks small in comparison.
True discipleship means:
• choosing Christ over comfort
• choosing obedience over feelings
• choosing truth over approval
• choosing holiness over sin
• choosing His will over yours
3. Discipleship Means Carrying Your Cross Daily
Not a necklace.
Not a symbol.
A surrender.
“You cannot be my disciple unless you take up your cross each day and follow me.”
— Luke 9:23 (CEV)
Your cross is:
• dying to your old life
• rejecting sin’s pull
• surrendering your plans
• living for God’s glory
This isn’t punishment.
It’s freedom —
because the self-centered life is slavery,
but the Christ-centered life is joy.
4. Discipleship Means Counting the Cost Before You Commit
Jesus used real-life examples to explain:
• A builder counts the cost before laying a foundation
• A king counts the cost before going to war
He taught:
“You cannot follow me without first counting the cost.” (paraphrased from Luke 14:28–32)
Many admire Jesus.
Few follow Him.
The difference?
One counts the cost. The other doesn’t.
5. Discipleship Costs Much — But Losing Jesus Costs More
Following Jesus may cost:
• relationships
• reputation
• opportunities
• comfort
• convenience
• approval
But walking away from Jesus costs:
• peace
• purpose
• hope
• forgiveness
• eternal life
One path costs little but ends in loss.
The other costs much but ends in glory.
What This Chapter Leaves in Us
Following Jesus is the greatest privilege in the world — but it is not cheap, shallow, or casual. Jesus clearly taught that discipleship comes with a cost. This cost is not paid in money, achievements, or religious performance. It is paid in surrender, in obedience, in laying down anything that competes with Jesus’ lordship over your life.
The Heart of the Cost of Discipleship
Jesus said:
“If you want to be my disciple, you must deny yourself, take up your cross, and follow me.”
— Matthew 16:24 (CEV)
This verse describes three lifelong realities of discipleship:
• Deny Yourself — let go of self-rule
• Take Up Your Cross — die to the old life
• Follow Me — walk behind Jesus step by step
The cost is real. But so is the reward. Jesus never asks us to surrender anything without giving us something infinitely greater in return.
Table: The Cost vs. The Reward (CEV Scripture Support)
| What Discipleship Costs | What Jesus Gives in Return |
|---|---|
| Comfort | “I will give you rest.” (Matthew 11:28 CEV) |
| Control | “Let the LORD lead you.” (Proverbs 3:5–6 CEV) |
| Reputation | “You are God’s own people.” (1 Peter 2:9 CEV) |
| Sinful habits | “Anyone who belongs to Christ is a new person.” (2 Corinthians 5:17 CEV) |
| Approval of people | “If God is on our side, can anyone be against us?” (Romans 8:31 CEV) |
| Earthly rewards | “Great is your reward in heaven.” (Matthew 5:12 CEV) |
Why Jesus Tells Us to Count the Cost
Jesus teaches that discipleship is serious. He compares it to a builder laying a foundation (Luke 14:28–30). He wants us to enter with eyes open, hearts ready, and wills surrendered. This is not because He wants fewer followers — but because He wants true followers.
Discipleship is not about perfection. It’s about direction.
Not about never falling. But always returning.
Not about having strength. But relying on His.
The Cost Leads to Freedom
Everything Jesus asks us to surrender is something that cannot give lasting life.
Everything He gives us in return cannot be taken away.
“If the Son gives you freedom, you are free!”
— John 8:36 (CEV)
When you give up:
• sin — you gain freedom
• control — you gain guidance
• fear — you gain peace
• your old life — you gain eternal life
Discipleship costs much, but losing Christ costs everything.
Table: What You Lay Down vs. What God Builds Up
| You Lay Down | God Builds Up |
|---|---|
| Pride | Humility (James 4:6 CEV) |
| Fear | Courage (Joshua 1:9 CEV) |
| Sin | Purity (Psalm 51:10 CEV) |
| Shame | Forgiveness (1 John 1:9 CEV) |
| Self-will | God’s will (Luke 22:42 CEV) |
| Earthly perspective | Eternal perspective (Colossians 3:2 CEV) |
A Final Word: Discipleship Costs, but Jesus Is Worth It
No one in Scripture ever regretted following Jesus — only the ones who walked away did. The rich young ruler kept everything but lost the one thing that mattered. Peter left everything but gained a new life. Paul lost status but gained eternal treasure.
Jesus is not asking you to sacrifice as punishment.
He is inviting you to surrender so you can truly live.
“If you give up your life for me, you will find it.”
— Matthew 16:25 (CEV)
