A Bible Study Based on the CEV Translation
Two Letters, One Savior
Though Titus and Philemon are short letters in the New Testament, they offer profound insights into the heart of the Gospel and the person of Jesus Christ. Both letters are written by the Apostle Paul—one to Titus, a trusted church leader; the other to Philemon, a Christian brother and slave owner. Despite different purposes, both letters shine a light on how Jesus transforms character, relationships, and community.
Paul’s deep theology doesn’t fade in these smaller books. Instead, he clearly presents Jesus as our Savior, Redeemer, and the one who restores broken lives. These epistles show us how sound doctrine and gospel transformation work together in practical ways.
1. Jesus: Our Savior and Source of Grace (Titus 1:4)
“I pray that God the Father and Christ Jesus our Savior will be kind to you and will bless you with peace!”
— Titus 1:4 (CEV)
Paul opens his letter to Titus by acknowledging that Jesus is our Savior and the source of grace, kindness, and peace. This divine kindness is not based on merit, but freely given to those in Christ.
2. Jesus: The Hope of Eternal Life (Titus 1:2)
“Then they will have the hope of eternal life that God promised long ago. And God never tells a lie!”
— Titus 1:2 (CEV)
Jesus is not just the Savior for today but the guarantee of eternal life. The Gospel provides hope that reaches beyond this world and anchors us in the faithfulness of God.
3. Jesus: The Embodiment of God’s Kindness (Titus 2:11)
“God has shown us how kind he is by coming to save all people.”
— Titus 2:11 (CEV)
The grace of God appeared—this is a reference to Jesus Himself. He is the visible, tangible expression of God’s kindness, coming not just to save, but to train us to live righteously.
4. Jesus: The One We Wait For (Titus 2:13)
“We are filled with hope, as we wait for the glorious return of our great God and Savior Jesus Christ.”
— Titus 2:13 (CEV)
This verse is a powerful declaration of Christ’s divinity. Jesus is not only Savior—He is God. His return is our blessed hope, the event every believer eagerly anticipates.
5. Jesus: The Redeemer Who Makes Us His Own (Titus 2:14)
“He gave himself to rescue us from everything that is evil and to make our hearts pure. He wanted us to be his own people and to be eager to do right.”
— Titus 2:14 (CEV)
Christ redeemed us with purpose—to form a people who reflect His heart and holiness. His death doesn’t just cleanse; it transforms and claims us as His own.
6. Jesus: The Savior Who Makes Us New (Titus 3:4-6)
“God our Savior showed us how good and kind he is. He saved us because of his mercy, and not because of any good things we have done. God washed us by the power of the Holy Spirit. He gave us new birth and a fresh beginning.”
— Titus 3:4-6 (CEV)
This rich Gospel summary places Jesus at the center. Salvation is not a reward—it is a gift rooted in God’s mercy through Jesus Christ. The result? New life, new hope, new purpose.
7. Jesus: The Uniting Force in Christian Relationships (Philemon 1:6)
“As you share your faith with others, I pray that they may come to know all the blessings Christ has given us.”
— Philemon 1:6 (CEV)
In Philemon, Paul appeals for reconciliation between Philemon and his runaway slave, Onesimus. His argument is not legal or emotional—it is Christ-centered. In Christ, relationships are not based on status but on grace and shared faith.
8. Jesus: The Lord Who Changes Lives (Philemon 1:10-11)
“While I was in jail, I won Onesimus to Christ. And now he is like a son to me. Before this, he was useless to you. But now he is useful both to you and to me.”
— Philemon 1:10-11 (CEV)
Jesus transforms the useless into the useful. Onesimus, once a rebellious servant, becomes a brother in Christ. The Gospel turns broken pasts into redemptive futures.
9. Jesus: The One Who Levels All Social Barriers (Philemon 1:16)
“He is no longer your slave. He is a dear friend, and he is also a follower of Christ.”
— Philemon 1:16 (CEV)
In Christ, social and cultural barriers fall. Jesus creates a new identity for every believer—brothers and sisters in the family of God.
10. Jesus: The Model of Forgiveness (Philemon 1:17-18)
“If you consider me a friend because of Christ, then welcome Onesimus as you would welcome me. If he has cheated you or owes you anything, charge it to my account.”
— Philemon 1:17-18 (CEV)
Paul’s words echo the work of Jesus. Just as Paul says, “Charge it to me,” Christ says to the Father, “Charge their sins to Me.” Jesus takes our debt and covers it with His righteousness.
Conclusion: Grace in Action Through Christ
Titus and Philemon reveal the practical power of the Gospel. In Titus, we see how Christ shapes doctrine, character, and hope. In Philemon, we see how Christ heals, restores, and brings equality. Both letters exalt Jesus as the One who saves, sanctifies, and restores relationships.
These letters remind us: It is not enough to believe in Christ—we are called to live like Him.
